I am using Zovirax cream to treat my cold sores. I'm supposed to apply it every two to three hours and have been applying it about every two hours while I'm awake. However, my face is itching now. I realize that I shouldn't scratch it, which I'm not. Should I start applying the Zovirax every three hours? Will that help, or is there anything I can do to reduce the itching? It's not too bad, I just want to know if that will help.

cut back on it...if the cold sore is drying up, then it's working and drying your other skin out.

good luck

3-4 times a day is about the max. Talk to the Doc about the side effects, it could just be dry skin. That being said, Zoviraz Creme is a dinosaur when it comes to cold sore relief. It comes in pill form (generic if desired) and it is much more effective than the creme.

The Zovirax isn't what's causing the itch, it's the cold sores themselves.
I would continue to use it as you are doing. It needs a good amount to control the virus.

Ask your doc for an rx for oral antivirals. It will work better to help you get on top of this outbreak.
