Hapkido is a Korean form of aikido, not tae kwon do.

Hapkido is a completely separate discipline from TKD, although it uses many of the striking techniques from TKD.

and yes the instructor could teach it as a separate Martial art from TKD but that is entirely up to him as to if he wants to teach it apart from TKD.

I know my instructor teaches it Hapkido and Tang Soo Do as separate Martial Arts, because we are trying to keep the traditional elements to them instead of combining their techniques or trying to create another Martial Art entirely from the two disciplines.

They are seperate arts. But, now a days instructors are starting to take off the blinders off and realize that the arts they teach have weak areas. The instructors that aren't stuck in the past are teaching more arts in the same place to fix this problem. I wish more people were this way.

They are separate but they are both Korean arts that combine many of their techniques. Many TKD instructors, including mine, also incorporate Hapkido techniques into their curriculum.

I would have preferred to take only Hapkido, but those instructors are harder to find.
