I know that everyone gets sad, but what bothers me is that somedays I am sad for no reason. A few months ago, when it was really bad, i would go home and cry every day. That only lasted for about a week though. When that was happening, my friends noticed something was wrong, and approched me about it. I told them I didn't know why I was so sad, but I don't think they believed me. It's not that bad now, but it still bothers me that I get so down and don't know why.
Has anyone else gone through this? Does anyone know why this might be happening?

I also find it hard to open up to people I see in real life. Yesterday I went as far as to tell my best friend I was feeling sad, but after that I pretended everything was fine.

Yes, I get that. Sometimes it's worse than others and seems to go in cycles. But I get sad about nothing and I can't sleep and I don't want to talk or move or think. The worst thing is that nothing can help me get over it; i just have to wait it out... which is very frustrating to my boyfriend, who always does everything he can to help. My mum says it's clinical depression, which I guess makes sense because she had it, and they say it's hereditary. She told me to get help for it, but I never have because a) when I'm down like that I don't want to move, much less talk to people and b) when I'm not down, I just feel like it's not a big problem. So it goes. I guess I don't really have an answer about what to do, because I've never figured it out myself. You're not alone though. Good luck!

Sorry to sound so diagnostic for a second, but...

If you were evaluated, you probably wouldn't have Major Depressive Disorder because it doesn't seem that severe at this point, nor Dysthymic Disorder because it might not have been long enough at this point. They'd probably give you "Depressive Disorder NOS" meaning "not otherwise specified."

They'd give you this diagnosis because it would enable you to receive therapy under whatever health insurance you may have. And I think that's something to consider. As a therapist, I've experienced people who complain of the same thing. It's kind of hard to know what's happening if YOU don't even know. A good therapist might be able to get somewhere with you though. Good luck.

You probably eat a high-sugar diet.
People who are sugar-sensitive have naturally low levels of serotonin. As a result, you may feel depressed and find yourself craving foods such as bread, pasta or candy. This craving is the work of your brain, not your ego, because your brain knows that getting you to eat such foods will temporarily raise your serotonin level. Unfortunately, it will also have a devastating boomerang effect and cause all sorts of negative feelings.

some sadness is normal, but it seems that you may have something wrong with you. You should talk to your parents or a trusted adult. You should also try seeing a therapist, there is no shame in that.

Hang in there!
