I'm pretty sure that the Italians are objecting to the American military base because of the events happening in Iraq. I've seen on tv news the members of the Italian parliament being interviewed and most of them gave the American occupation of Iraq as the reason.

It's your country. Do as you please.

Let me tell you a story. I served at Naval Air Station Sigonella, Italy, on Sicily. It's near the town of Catania. The base was broken up into two separate areas. Transportation was provided by bus with local, Italian, civilian employees as drivers.

One driver would drive on the base. When the bus got to the gate that driver would sit in a seat behind the driver's seat and another driver, who'd been in that seat, would drive off base to the other half of the base. When we arrived he'd sit down and the first driver would drive on the base again.

That's that way it works in Italy. Those bases are "make work" projects. Whe we leave what are the odds a private employer is going to hire two guys to drive one bus?

Ciao

I think you are asking how we feel if the Italian parliament decides it no longer wants a base in Vicenza. If that is the case, I would say that it is up to the Italians to decide. I doesn't bother me one way or the other.

I say it is up to the Italians. They are the boss. I think the USA has enough bases in enough places as it is. We are having problems at home with out southern border and I would like to see active troops patrolling it.
