It seems to me that many Christians are sadists. It makes me sick to think that people can find comfort in thinking that others will eternally burn in flame and damnation. I strongly belief that it is bogus and people should refine christianity and get rid of the aspects of hell. Any input?

Sooner or later they'll wake up one morning and realize that Heaven and Hell are metaphors for the conditions your actions can create in your own life. Being doomed to never learn from your mistakes.... Repeating the same dumb drama over and over and over... THAT'S Hell. THAT'S torment. THAT'S repitition.

Breaking the cycle, improving things in the here-and-now, taking care of the only world that allows us to live... actively choosing LOVE over FEAR........THAT'S Heaven.

In that sense, they're right about one thing. On Earth as it is in Heaven. Or as I like to call it, As above.... So below.

I find no comfort that someone would burn for eternity for a life of sin. If I ever tell someone that, it is to deter them from living in sin. God loves all of us, and wishes that none should perish, and so it hurts my heart that anyone would choose that for themselves. However, I find no comfort in it. As far as people 'refining' Christianity, it is not the place of men to decide what the Bible says. Jesus Himself told us of a lake of fire and brimstone that evil people would be cast into, if they do not repent. You can call it bogus all you want, and it changes nothing. One does not 'get rid of the aspects of hell', as you put it. ( Oh, by the way - there is no such word as sadistical, it is sadistic)

Yes, it's really quite bizarre. For the last month or so, a group of them have been putting up "questions" about Carl Sagan and whether he's smouldering in hell right now. Bad enough that they would desecrate the name of this good and decent human being, but then they even seem to delight in the idea of a human being burning up in hell. They really get quite graphic about it, talking about smouldering eyes and painfully burning faces.

I know all Christians don't do this, but those who do are definitely badly deranged sadistic individuals, the sort that delights in pulling the wings off a fly.

Talk about giving Jesus a bad name!

I agree, somewhat. In my faith we don't necessarily believe in a place called hell. We believe that each of us are judged individually based upon our actions, thoughts, etc. (and only Christ is the judge). We also believe that our habits, desires, etc. will continue to exist with us after this life. According to how we lived our life and whether or not we accept certain things will be part of the judgement, but in the end, it will be the inability to satisfy our habits or desires and the knowledge of what we could have had that will be our hell. It won't be the place, but the state of mind. We all will be in a place better then we are now, but our eternal happiness is up to us, individually. (This is sort of like living the Buddhist philosophy in that we need to overcome the flesh or the self/attachment).

Although I will not attempt to deny that there are those who profess to be christian who speak that way. I would argue that this is not typical of all christians. I am a christian and do not take any happiness in the thought of others suffering. I do not enjoy telling people that this is the fate of those who reject Christ, but I will not lie. The bible states that this is their fate, I would not hide that from them, no more than I would hide any other impending harm from them. I do not think that qualifies me as a sadist.

gee, most all of the Christians I know, and I surely know more of them than you do, find it very, very sad that even one soul chooses to spend eternity in Hell rather that with Almighty God.
Christians did not "invent" Hell.
Christians did not create Hell.
God did that.
God cannot allow "unsaved" souls with a sinful nature to enter Heaven, because God is without sin, so there has to be somewhere else for them to go and Hell is that place.
God does not send people to Hell.
People make that choice all by themselves.

I agree with what you are saying. I would add that the sheer lack of justice in the disproportionate response baffles me. I can understand punishing someone. I could even understand punishing someone who took a life with a lifetime of punishment. I cannot understand nor can I accept punishing someone for eternity, regardless of what they did.

Perhaps this is why the Catholics invented Purgatory but let's make clear that Purgatory is a totally human (and humane) denial of what the bible clearly calls for.

you know it's weird because in the old testament lucifer aka satan is seen more as an accomplice to god's plan and there is no hell hell is the grave then the new testament lucifer aka satan is and adversary aka an enemy of god and hell is a fiery pit with teeth gnashing and gnawing anyway lucifer aka satan is nothing in the old testament as he's not even mentioned much but in the new testament he's mentioned so much that it's like he's so powerful almost as if he's a god and people don't even realize it

Yeap, many of them are sadists. (Not all though) I cannot begin to count the number of times I've had conversions with Christians who get a gleam in their eye when they speak of sinners roasting in the 'lake of fire' for all eternity. Truly, they remind me of the Ori on Stargate.

Sadistic for sure.

How could anyone be "happy" in Heaven knowing that good people were being eternally tormented in hell.

Yet they seem to gleefully spread that word...
