I met my future father-in-law for the first time a couple years ago, and he only speaks German and I only speak English. I thought it would be awful, but it was great. I smiled a lot and acted interested in what he said-even though I didn´t know what he was saying. I also used all the manners of an American culture, and was polite. It was a great visit, and we had fun...even not knowing the language of each other. Warmth and smiling is a universal language.
