I have bitten my nails for almost my whole life. Just recently I let them grow. They are now long.. I also have a bad habit of picking things.. Scars, zits, etc. Now, because I have the long nails making it easier to pick things, my face has gotten worse.

Know of anything I can do about it? I really try not to do it, but it's just a really bad habit...

Thanks.

I have this condition. It is called dermatillamania.

The best thing you can do is wash your face with a washcloth (so you don't feel bumps that will temp you to pick) leave the lights off in the bathroom (so you can't see anything you want to pick) and even throw a towel over the mirror, if possible.

Also figure out where and when you do the most picking, and make it impossible to do so - remove lights, mirrors, etc.

I finally had to go to therapy, and you might too. But don't get upset. Google the term and see what other kind of help you can find on it.

I know, I do the same thing til I bite my nails, then I can't pick at anything. I don't know if you smoke but I do... and from what I heard about smokers, they are people that need to do thing with their hands. I think thats why I pick at things and bite my nails when I'm not smoking. Others have told me that because I have my hands around my face all the time, that I must subconsciously be insecure about my face. I don't know, but I feel that habbits like that are mental and it's up to your mind power to control it. This is just a minor problem. At least you're not an alcoholic..lol. ;)

My recommendation is to go to a reputable dermatologist in your area and ask for suggestions from them on what to do. Also ask for photographs on scarring from doing this. Sometimes just the power of suggestion will help you to stop if you know what it may leave you looking like. Also just think about the germs you are spreading around with doing this, from the zits, to your nails and then by everything you touch. YUK, YUK, YUK!!! And all those poor people who touch the same things you do without knowing what they are getting. Now I am sure you don't want to do this!! Sweetie, clean up your act and be responsible. Love ya and have a great weekend!!

oh my god, i have the saaame problem. it's tough. what i try to do is never get too close to the mirror where i can see something i "have to" pick. You could also see your doctor and tell him about this and he may prescribe some type of anti-anxiety drug. My doctor did this for me and it helped... you feel more relaxed and the urge to pick seems to lessen. And once your face/skin begins to heal, you won't WANT to pick at it ... and that is when you say "do i need to pick that? is it worth it to get another scab/scar on my face?" and leave it alone. ... but for the beginning try an anti-anxiety medication that is non-addictive and just stay away from the mirror, it helps!
