Personally I wouldn't and didn't go through the expense of buying another cake when our one year anniversary came.
The idea of eating a piece of year old frozen cake was a bit gross to me so I pitched mine after a few months of looking at it in the freezer.
I took our wedding cake topper to a florist and had them make me a floral arrangement that contained our topper and used it as a centerpiece for a romantic candlelit dinner at home on our 1 year anniversary.
They now make actual flower arrangements that are shaped like cakes so you could even get one of those and put the topper on it. I just chose a regular floral arrangement but the idea of the flower cake is kind of neat.
P.S. I know someone is going to ask so no you don't eat the flowers, lol. It is just made to look like a cake - roflmbo
a picture of one can be seen here:

and is from a store called 1800flowers

Most buy a new cake, and don't actually eat the top of the original wedding cake.

Buy one and take in the memories. Eating year old cake is not that great anyways! I will be in the same situation as you and dont plan on saving my cake when I move.

Make your husband and you a cake with something on top that signifies your marriage so far, or something really fun the two of you have done.
Do not worry about a frozen cake-this is a silly tradition.

You know, the saving the wedding cake thing for a year is a bunch of crap. When we pulled ours out of the freezer we unfortunately took a bite each. It was one of the most pathetic things I have ever tasted. Instead go out for a good meal and have a nice piece of cake for desert.

For our anniversary, my parents ordered us a cake from the same bakery which we had gotten our wedding cake. It was great -- not only was it just like on our wedding day, but it wasn't freezerburned and a year old

I think it's a great idea. It shouldn't be too expensive to just get a really small one. You could even go for something fun like a small ice cream cake! You could make it a tradition and do it every year.

I think for your one year anniversy you should go to a bakery and ask about the small cakes you usually get one year olds..and have it decorated if not too expensice..other wise just make one yourself..and tell him..since we couldn't have the other one..I thought we should at least have this....hold cake out now.....
