Contact your neighborhood high school and find out if they offer training in babysitting (this will include certification in infant CPR as well as basic caregiving). If they do, get a list of babysitters who have qualified.

If they don't, find an area rec center, sign up for a class that has lots of other moms in it (could be a luncheon, fitness class, yoga or whatever...network with other moms and get some names.

If that doesn't work, contact your area Red Cross and see if you can find some resources there, or check into area learning centers and preschools. Chances are good that the caregivers there either moonlight or have younger siblings.

Hope that helps--

I am VERY picky about this, to be honest, since my only son died after a supposedly "good" babysitter left him alone in the tub and he drowned. I would suggest asking neighbors for referrals or people you or your hubby work with. Make sure they have CPR certification (this is a must) and good references.

Thanks for the kind words; i hope i didn't scare you but it's a reality for every parent and in my opinion you can never be TOO protective when it comes to who's watching your babies! There is no worse feeling than pulling up into your driveway and seeing an ambulance and cop car. If I'm blessed with another baby some day I will tell any sitter not to put my child in the tub no matter how dirty they get! It only takes a second! Anyway good luck finding a sitter.

Get some recommendations from neighbors. Talk to some mothers around your area and ask who baby sits their children. Word of mouth is powerful for this kind of thing because you don't want to take them to anybody but if you are new to town you need to start some where, but still be cautious. good luck.

You didn't mention your children's ages (mine are school-age) I'm assuming you're looking for someone to babysit occasionally in the evenings rather than something more full-time like a nanny or an au pair.

Ask around . . . do you live near a college or university? Sometimes they set up babysitting services for students looking to make some extra money . . . our neighbor found babysitters by advertising in a local college's newspaper . . . ask at your child's school, the assistant teacher at my son's nursery school babysat for us . . . you could look for babysitting services in your new city . . . if you meet someone with a fulltime babysitter or nanny they like, that nanny might be available for an evening babysitting job.

When you get situation you can look into your church. Some churches have bulletin boards. meet with some of the stay at home moms in your area. Put up a wanted sign on the church you attend. Make friends at your local park. See if your library would have any info, or put up a wanted add on the library bulletin board, or put a add in your neighborhood newspaper. Good luck.

Call the children's aide society and ask them if they have a list of places or people that have been approved to look after children. They are a great resource of information. Take care Heather

We joined our local "Welcome Wagon" or newcomers club. There we met people with kids who babysat and they actually had a list of kids who were interested. We also had the same sort of list at the church we joined. That said, I would call a few people that had used the babysitter to make sure she/he does a good job.

Two very good places to check out
First the local schools ask the guidance councilor they are familiar with the high school students who is reliable and who are not.
Your local church The minister or his wife most likely know a good reliable person who they would recommend to you
Good Luck!
