Hi Christina...cats will hump inanimate objects or other animals to establish dominance over those objects or others. Scientists have observed this more commonly among spayed/neutered animals.

It is possible that your male smells a female cat in heat nearby,But it probably is just because that is what cats (and dogs) do when they get mature.
He may have picked the blanket because it carries your scent. I had a cat who used to hump my leg, and would still hump the jeans even if they were lying in the laundry, on the bed, wherever. I think it has to do with your scent in the blanket, but I could be wrong.Hope you find your answer and hope I helped a little.

My cat does this a lot as well. He does it by scratching the blankets softly and soft humping movements. I have a female cat but I dont think they do it. I think this is there way to practice or something.

Is he really humping the blanket or is he just doing "rabbit kicks"? The rabbit kicks are just a form of play to your cat. They do it with their toys and stuff when they get frisky. I have a cat who does it with my blanket.
