YES, If there is a plane in the air that see your plane they will mistake the light you are using to read as something other than the window of a plane. So you are asked to close the covers over the window.

This happens mostly on international flights, inbetween the two meal services, so that passengers can sleep. On westbound afternoon flights, it doesn't make sense because the best way to adjust to the time difference is to stay up during the entire afternoon. Before personal TV screens were introduced, this was also done so passengers could watch the movies on the main screens. During taxi, takeoff, and landing, you must open the window shades so your eyes can adjust to the outside light levels in the event of an evacuation.

It's a psychological thing...
Most people are "programmed" to sleep when it's dark. If you are flying international, the "darkness" isn't a real night time. So to minimize "jet lag" they ask you to close the window so it doesn't seem like it's dark.
OR...
They don't want you to see the night gremlins as they rip apart the engines. ;)

There are the blinking lights on the wingtips which may bother some people. Also, the sun may start shining through the open window which will wake some people up.

hi Colin. We regularly motivate passengers to close the window blinds on evening flights the place all of us understand that the solar will upward thrust for the period of the flight. that's particularly executed to permit passengers to sleep. If all of us understand that we are going to reach till now break of day then we don't situation asking human beings to close their blinds. that's a curtesy request, only like asking human beings in economic gadget to place their seatbacks up for the period of meal provider to permit the guy in the back of them greater area together as ingesting. no person is forced to conform, yet maximum folk do it out of admire for their fellow travellers. Window blinds might desire to be open for taxi, takeoff and landing.

I've flown at night quite a few times, and I've never been asked to pull down the window shade. So I don't know what you're talking about. Sorry.
