A rough guide for engine horsepower to electrical output is 500 watts per horsepower. Your generator is likely rated in the range of 2500 watts and supplies a single 120V 20A circuit. There is no way you will have a 5kW generator powered by a 5HP engine.
You can operate any 120V appliances up to 20A maximum. Make sure your extension cord are adequate for the current requirements. Any fridge or freezer will be fine. Furnace may be ok, depending on whether it uses a large blower fan or water circulating pump. You can even operate a small ceramic heater up to about 1500 watts.
Have a look through my generator page for other operating and connection ideas.

Check the wattage wizard at Coleman Powermate for an idea what you can operate.

The power output is 5,000 watts surge maximum.

That means the generator can handle brief periods of maximum power draw. Sustainable loads will be less than 5KW (kilowatts) - I would avoid going higher that 4,500 at the most.

You can power a refrigerator a few lights, perhaps a TV and a few small appliances.

Sounds like 5 kilowatts peak. 120 volts at 40 amps

Just add up the watts of everything you want to run. Like 3 100 watt light bulbs, etc.
My whole house could run on that!

Yes. The voltage is the maximum rated voltage for the plug. Since 230 volts is below this max rating the plug will work fine.

5000 watts you can run any 120 or 12 volt load that does not consume more that 5000 watts.
