No, what prozac does is exactly what you're describing, it numbs the feeling so people who are depressed don't feel pain. It can not make you feel happy, and has been proven to cause suicidal thoughts even in people with no previous history of depression or suicidal inclinations.

I would suggest talking with your psychiatrist about getting off prozac, and staying off it and other medication for 6 months or so, and see what kind of difference it makes, in the meantime try talk therapy to find out what's causing the depression (if they say you have a chemical imbalace, ask to see the test results which detail your brain chemistry, I guarentee they won't be able to show you)

A couple of things that can help day to day are getting more exercise, spending time in the sun, and changing your eating habits (less heavy food, like cream sauces and empty carbs, more fruit and veggies, the more energy your body spends digesting, the less energy you have). Alternative therapies, such as aromatherapy and massage can help as well.

Prozac doesn't increase moods. Anti-depressants stablize or normalize moods. Some people describe a sensation of numbness from taking anti-depressants. You should consult your doctor about this. All anti-depressants take time to reach maximum effect. This can be anywhere for four to eight weeks. Some medications work better on some people and not on others. It may be necessary to try something else. No medication can totally eliminate the depressive feelings. This requires (in addition to the medication), therapy. Ask your doctor about a referral to a mental health clinic for therapy.

hi Ben. you're taking the wonderful attitude by using suggesting the upward thrust on your standard practitioner,, quite than only taking it. The person dosage selection for Prozac is between 20 and 60mg daily (taken in the morning), so your suggestion will placed you in the direction of the type. except your standard practitioner has any particular concerns approximately elevating the dose, it style of feels a sensible answer. He might proportion the view that that's greater valuable to circumvent you slipping right into a depressive episode quite than attempting to handle it after that's happened. Take care.

i dont think it increases happiness and i'm not going to act like i know all the medical terms and how it workd, but i do know exactly what you are describing. the numbness and being able to laugh but not really feel it. i lived like that for many years, i am currently on prozac and it has reall given me a second chance at life. i've survived a suicide attempt. but prozac may not have the same effects on everybody, only your doc can determine which meds if any will be right for you. i just want to tell you that no matter how hopless you feel, things can get bettter. but the only way that it can is if you really want to get better...it took me a long time to realize that
