SHIMS - remove the generator nut &shims - take a couple of the of the shims out from between the pully halfs and place them on the out side of the pully with the rest of the shims.

There are shims behind the generator pulley hub and inbetween the generator pulley itself(as it is 2 halfs) Take a flat blade screwdriver and slide it down the rectangular hole between the pulley and the generator. and rotate the pulley until the screwdrivers jams it from moving. Then get a crescent or the VW spark plug wrench socket - the big end is for this generator nut, and take off the nut.
Behind the hub(under the nut) there will be extra shims. It is a storage area for the shims.
How this works. The more shims between the 2 halfs the looser the belt. Taking out a shim or two, forces the belt higher up the "V" of the v groove pulley...making it tighter. If you take out a couple and put the halfs back together you have to let the engine rotate while you tighten on the pulley nut(otherwise you will pinch the belt in one spot. You will see what I is talking about)
While it is goofy, it works, for how often do you change a fan belt? NEV VAR!
