Calzone and Stromboli are both turnovers that are made from pizza dough and ingredients.

Basically a Calzone is folded once to give a mostly half moon shape. whereas a Stromboli is folded twice giving a more loaf like appearance.

Beyond that as you can see from other answers the fillings have become whatever someone wants them to be, from simple to complex.

The consensus seems to be that Stromboli was first introduced in Philadelphia in the 1950s and has the name of a tiny volcanic Italian island. (No doubt from the hot ingredients cheese and sauce "erupting" from the fresh cooked dough.)

The origin of the Calzone is some what farther in the past, and does not have as clearly identifiable beginning.

Stromboli are similar to calzones, but traditionally the two are distinct dishes, as stromboli usually contain only mozzarella cheese, while calzones contain a cheese mixture (often including ricotta) and tend to lack marinara sauce.

This comes from my knowledge of the pizza place I worked at in High school -

Calizone - pizza dough folded in half (semi circle) with sauce, peporoni and sausage and cheese in it.. There were also variations like 3 cheese, supreme, mexican style, etc.

Stromboli - Dough folded in thirds with ranch sauce, canadian bacon, cheese, onions, green pepers inside. There was only one of these
