A well fed and coated Bernese can stay outside indefinitely. They were bred to withstand the cold. "Mountain dog" Its cold up there.

With every day pass, our country is getting into more and more trouble. The inflation, unemployment and falling value of dollar are the main concern for our Government but authorities are just sleeping, they don’t want to face the fact. Media is also involve in it, they are force to stop showing the real economic situation to the people. I start getting more concern about my future as well as my family after watching the response of our Government for the people that affected by hurricane Katrina.
According to recent studies made by World Bank, the coming crisis will be far worse than initially predicted. So if you're already preparing for the crisis (or haven't started yet) make sure you watch this video at http://www.familysurvival.tv and discover the 4 BIG issues you'll have to deal with when the crisis hits, and how to solve them fast (before the disaster strikes your town!) without spending $1,000s on overrated items and useless survival books.

It would have to be pretty darned cold, I'd think. But as long as he has a proper, insulated dog house, he'll be fine. If the gound freezes where you live and temps go below 0, make sure that the dog house is raised off the ground and there is a flap covering the door to keep draft out and allow your dog to build up heat with his body temperature.

If you provide an insulated dog house and an ice-proof water source, I don't know as it matters, because they could go inside and get warm if they chose, and you always need to provide fresh water. What I worry about with my Newfie is that the neighbours will have a different standard for what is too cold than the dog has! She's barking "hey everybody, my mom let me stay out, aren't you jealous?!?!" and they think she's saying "I'm freezing, let me in!"

As long as they have access to a covered shelter (like a doghouse with a bed), they should be ok for 8 hours. I have a Newfoundland (same family of dogs) and worry about that too, but it gets too warm for him in the house and he often barks to be let outside to play in the snow and just cool off. They're actually probably more comfortable in the snow than in the house.

Your dog should be okay outside unless the temp is below O*. Just make sure he has a doghouse or shed where he can get out of the cold and rain/snow.

I agree with the first answerer. Also, it depends on if your dog has a thick winter coat or not.
