Not since I first discovered that most good dentists will do everything they can to numb you out before they work on your mouth.
Look, I was a total freak about going to the dentist.
Did NOT want the pain!
Until I found a doctor that, before injecting Novocaine, he would first give me nitrous oxide gas to relax me, and then rub a flavored benzocaine gel on my gums to numb them.
After a few minutes of getting high on the gas and numb from the gel, he'd stick that needle in my gum to further deaden the pain.
By this time, I wouldn't care if he pulled my arm out of its socket - I was feeling good!
You have a right to ask for ANY pain relief.
It's your body and everyone has a different pain threshold.
Ask!
If they won't do it - get another dentist!
Good luck.

If you are talking about an actual "panic attick" I can totally relate. One time, when I was having a very short dental procedure, I had a panic attack towards the end of the appointment. I started taking the paper bib off and telling them that I had to get out of the chair right away. It was the the "fight or flight" type of anxiety. I felt better as soon as I got out of the treatment room. What I have learned about this problem since is, that one of the best things to do when you feel extreme anxiety is to release it by doing exercise. I know that sounds strange but one of the reasons we get the panic is that we have some type of fear inside us that we may not even be aware of. It is usually an unrealistic type of fear. Our bodies are conditioned to produce adrenaline so that we can "flee" from the fear, thus the rapid heartbeat. Most of us try to hide our panic or anxiety and that makes it worse. Our body is just trying to take over and give us that extra burst of energy. When we try to hold it in, we have the attacks. So, when you start feeling the panic coming on, do some hard exercise and release the energy that your body is giving you. I know this sounds silly, but it really does work. As for the dentist, it should be painless nowdays, so don't be afraid. They are there to provide a good service for all of us.

Hello I am a Scotish man living in Essex England, up to about 12 years ago I was terrified of the dentist nuntill I seen this great chinese dentist called Eric, he is so gentle thst by combing your hair hurts more. If you need treatment and are scared of the dentist, tell him or her, dont bottle it up, he or she can put on a pre anesthetic cream that they use for kids but dont be embarrassed, ask for the cream which will be put on your gum about 10 minutes or so before treatment, after when you will feel nothing and can relax.

I have the same problem. I have panic disorder, which of course gets worse when I have to go to the dentist. I rely on prayer and deep breathing to get me through. I also have a small teddy bear that I hold in my hand when I go to the dentist. It's very small, about 4 inches in length, and just fits in my hand, and I can squeeze it when I'm nervous. Hope this helps!

did you have a bad experience in the past? If so speak to your current dentist about it. If he wants to keep you as a patient he will do everyting in his power to make you comfortable. Start by having a cleaning or small filling done, or just ask if you can book an appointment to meet/speak with the dentist so you can get a sense of if you like him or her.
Good Luck

-I can't open my mouth very wide, so every time I go they have to use tools that stretch my mouth open, it hurts. - I had many cavities as a kid, so the would also fill them in and it was unpleasant. - I had braces (self explanatory...) - The laser thingy they use in my mouth, makes it sore after words - The paste you have to put in you mouth after a visit makes me vomit - .... and the list goes on I realize I sound very child like while stating these reasons, however I am just one of those people who had bad experiences with the dentists form day one. Even stepping into his office still makes me uneasy. Which is really sad cuz he is a nice guy, and all he is trying to do is fix my teeth. He has done and awesome job, but I am still terrified.

I have read some litterature about panic attacks. But they allways seem to have a more scientific approach and that is nothing I need in my struggle to survive those horrible panic attacks. This is a "hand on" and very practical book. I felt it was written to me. I am sure that you are going to feel the same.
Joe Barry writes exactly how I think. The examples are perfectly described. And the method is genius. I recommend this book and thanks Joe Barry for writing it. It changes your life

i have this huge fear about going to the dentist. i was just at the dentist on thursday. they were going to do some work on my molar but i freaked out and they couldn't work on me. so now they are putting me on a prescription that is similar to the drug bars. it's supposed to mellow me out and to calm me down. ask your dentist about getting something similar.
