Beagles,But any dog can be trained for this as they all have good nose scent. The bigger the ears and lower to the ground the better. The ears flopping back and forth push the scent up toward there nose.

It would help if we knew what 'stuff' you wanted to find. Dogs have to be trained to alert on a specific kind of scent, which is a long hard process. It generally takes around 18 months of solid, daily training. They will not naturally be interested in finding what you want to find, unless it's small and furry. A Lab is better suited to this kind of job than a Bloodhound. Bloodhounds are happier trailing, and a Bloodhound would be 'too much dog' for the job.

Any of the hunting breeds, basset hounds, beagles, weimeraners, blue tick, redbones, they're all scent hounds. But if you want a dog for walking down the beach and digging up stuff, you're better off with a metal detector. You probably won't be interested in the same "treasures" your dog is. Metals won't give off a scent for your dog, although they might smell like whoever handled them last, if they haven't been there a real long time. If you're treasure hunting, buy a good metal detector. They're cheaper than a good hunting dog, and you don't have to feed 'em!

This isn't actually likely to work, unless it was a very well-trained dog. But even if it the dog was trained to do that, it would only let you know when it found something that it was interested in. You'll be doing a lot of digging for a smelly old bone, not for treasure.
But just to answer your question, scenthounds and retrievers tend to have the best sense of smell, as do many breeds in the sporting group, including pointers and brittany spaniels.

Believe it or not, Weimaraners noses are nearly as good as a Bloodhounds! Any of the scenthounds would be good, also. You can check at www.akc.org to find if there are any clubs that train for tracking or hunting near you, to learn more about teaching the dog to sniff things out. A metal detector might be something you could look into, also - but it wouldn't provide the companionship of a good ol' dog!

any of the dogs in the hound group or sporting group are good tracker and hunters go to AKC.org and you can look up the different groups and what dogs are in them. You can also do a net seach by sporting group or hound group to do the same thing.
thats only the start you still have to train the dog to do the searches they dont do them on their own.

Preferably, a hound and a breed that has digging and searching in its background. Dachshunds are natural diggers and burrowers, since they were bred and developed to go after badgers underground and kill them. But really, it is all in what you train them to do that counts, and whether or not the dog is interested in doing it. Good luck.

Any scent hound. There are two types of hounds: scent and sight. The sight hounds are leaner, greyhound-y creatures. The others are scent hounds. However, no dog naturally finds things that you specifically want it to find and barks to alert you without intense training. It would be more likely to find a dead fish and bark to alert you than a buried ring.

Papillons are great too. I've read this is the latest breed that search and rescue teams are beginning to use mostly because they can get in tight spaces. I got my adult daughter one and he's a beautiful dog too - expensive though!
