My family moved from California to Kentucky; Mi familia se mudó de California a Kentucky.

My family moved from California; My familia se mudó desde California.

Si, if you do not specify the destination or if it's implied, you use "desde". But this is not a general rule, just for this case and other cases perhaps. Saying "de" in the second case sounds weird.

You can say; "mi familia se mudó de ... ". That works, and don't worry, it's not from a web translator.
