Here are a few of the safer things that you can do.

If you can get her to sit on your lap and kind of hold her still for about five minutes before going to bed and first thing in the morning. Get the hottest water you can get from your focet, do not boil it as if it spills it would burn her. But get hte hottest from your own focet and then put you and her's heads under at towel and breath in the very warm water. It will help get the muscus out before she lies down. Do this for about five minutes. You can also have her get in the warmest bath she can take without burning of course, don't get her head wet, but just have her in the warm water for five minutes, breathing it.

DO NOT FEED HER ANY MILK, Nursing or otherwise for twenty-four to forty-eight hours, two days. WHY? Milk actually creates more mucus when someone has a severe cold or allergies, eliminating it will help her breath better in general. Cheese shouldn't be eatend within several hours of going to sleep or it will have the same affect.

DO NOT GIVE A CHILD with that kind of congestion any Alcohal despite what some parents will say, in order to get her to sleep. Many parents give children regular adult cold medications that contain alcohal because they want their child to sleep. Such medications suppress breathing and if she already full of mucus and coughing, she's having problems breathing and you could cause her to stop breathing by surpressing her breathing further. Alcohol is a surpessant, depressant.

Getting her a genertic decongestion, liquid for children would help her a lot. Ask the stores pharacist to recommend one, but if he/she recommends Triaminic, then just find the generic with the same active ingredients. Guaifenesin is really good at getting out the muscus and many come with an antihistamine and guaifenesin combination. This combination would help stop the histamine reaction that keeps the cold cycle going on and allow her body to fight off the cold. Do not use extra, as antihistamines in children can cause sleepiness in some and cause others to be slightly hyper.

An hour before you put her to bed, you might trying getting her to stand with her arms straight up. While she does this you use CUPPED hands, not flat or you'll hurt her. You pat her in the lung area, front and back with cupped hands and encourage her to cough. This causes an echo in her lungs, that breaks up the mucus. If she won't stand still to do this for about two to three minutes, then have her lay on a very flat surface face down. You use your cupped hands to pat her back, up and down, don't be soft, do it firmly, but not hard. If you keep her flat and your hands are cupped you won't harm her or hurt her in any way. Never use flat hands. My friend is a Respritory Therapist and taught me this technique.

HOW SHE IS FEELING BETTER SOON.

Huh....if she's coughing so much and so hard she's vomiting, I would think the Dr. would Rx some cough medicine that is stronger than over the counter. When my son was like that the Dr. Rx something called Promethazine, that also had a mild sedative to help him sleep. It was great! If the Dr. really won't do anything for you then you can try the Dimetapp for cough and Children's Claritin or Benadryl to dry her up. All the other "cold" stuff never works for my son and the stuff that has "multi-symptom" really never helps. Also, they make those plug-in Vapor Soothers that really work well. You can also elevate one side of her matress b/c laying down is the main culprit of the night coughing. Other than that, you're going to have to

I've always liked Triaminic Cough for my 2 yr old son. Last year he was that bad, coughing to the point he would throw up. The Triaminic really helped his cough a lot. Also Dimetapp usually works pretty good. And I think that Tylenol has the Children's Tylenol + Cold. And the Vick's BABY RUB is great for a stuffy nose.

Since you already took her to the dr and determined it was a cold, here are some thoughts on other things to make the child more comfortable-- 1) elevate the head part of her bed so that maybe the drainage won't build up in her throat. The dr is always telling me this! 2) Is there maybe an underlying allergy? My son used to always throw up (usually after trying to eat) because of too much mucus in his system. We found out he is allergic to numerous airborn allergens such as dust, pollen, mold, etc. Not stuff we can easily get rid of. He is now on Singulair and receives allergy shots once a month. 3) try putting Vicks on her chest or doing the Vicks plug-in thing in her room Good luck! I hope these offer some comfort.

when did you take her to the doctor? if it has been three days or more, or her symptoms are worsting, or she has new symptoms she should go back. sometimes parents bring their children in early in the illness and doctors are not able to properly diagnose because all the symptoms are not visible. or sometimes colds can settle in a child's lungs because unlike adults they don't blow their noses and get mucous in their stomachs that causes them to vomit. so, i'd say it's worth a call to her doctor. (sorry i know it's not the answer you wanted to hear)

other then that, humidifier, vicks baby rub, lots of fluids.benedryl or dimetapp works good to "dry" up and may also help with the sleeping.

Use a cold air humidifier, do not use hot air, or a vaporizer. My baby is in the hospital in intensive care because of a very nasty cold, which turnes into RSV. The pediatricians here have all said that a cold air humidifier will help tremendously. I used it at home before we had to come stay in the hospital and it did help, not so much for him, but he needed medical attention.

PLEASE try these 3 remedies...EVERY time I feel run-down or get that tickly feeling in my throat I take these 3 things and it NEVER turns into a full-blown cold.

1) Olive Leaf Extract by "Herb Pharm"....it's in liquid form, and has no side effects...it immediately goes to work to kill any viruses in you...and it's all natural.

2) "JarrowDophilus", by "Jarrow Formulas"...it will keep the healthy "flora" in your body in perfect balance which keeps your immune system strong.

3) "Emergen-C" Vitamin C packets by "Alacer"

All three can be purchased at "Whole Foods Market", possibly "Trader Joe's", or call your local health food store to inquire about these 3 products.

EVERY friend and family member who has taken this advice, hardly ever gets sick.

For your throat: "Peaceful Mountain--Throat Rescue"
You will NEVER find a more powerful throat spray which is all-natural....soothing, fast acting, and kills bad bacteria on contact.

You'll see!! :) Get well soon!
