You're missing the point. It's rude to fart in a crowded elevator in the first place.

It'd be most correct not to fart :P If you really couldn't help it, and they *know* it's you, saying sorry would be most appropriate and insisting it wasn't you would be a bit rude. However if it was silent don't admit a thing, who's really to know for sure?

I'm sorry, but if that happened to me, not only would I NOT admit it, but I would look at the person next to me with a shocked look which says "what a rude thing for you to do!".
