I'm in my early 20's and I have noticed grey hairs hiding behind my ears. You can't see it unless I hunt for them in the light.
what causes grey hairs? Is it old age or is it that I'm getting very wise?

Gray hair is typically a result of natural aging. Pigment in the hair shaft comes from special cells at the root (base) of the hair. These cells are genetically programmed to make a certain amount of pigment (melanin) at specific ages. At some point in the aging process, these cells make less and less pigment until the hair has very little pigment. White hair has no pigment, and gray hair has some but not as much as a red, black or brown hair.

Not all hairs respond in the same way or at the same time. So the graying process is gradual. You can't prevent from graying. Some people start graying in their 30's, and some not until there 60's. Genetics likely play a strong role in graying.

As far as hair is concerned, genetics has a big role to play in determining as to when the hair turn grey. You can also ask your parents about when they started having grey hair sooner? If they don't than you have to blame your wise lifestyle ;). Reduction of melanin production causes the greying (graying) of hair. One more factor that stops melanin production is Hydrogen peroxide.

Most prominent external factors contributing to hair are:
smoking,
anemia,
lack of vitamins,
particularly vitamins B and
untreated thyroid conditions.

Genetic dispostion to early grey. Like Taylor Hicks was fully grey in his 20's, some people just grey early.

I went to High School with a guy that greyed out by 18.

Genetics unfortunately. I have a fiend who went grey at 16. Since you are in your early 20's, it is definitely not old age - so you must be getting wise!! Hey, anyway, better grey hair than no hair!!!

Genetics is the biggest factor. If your parents greyd early you may too. It's natural don't worry about. Coloring your hair is fun!

It's hereditary. I started getting it when I was 19 and it just keeps getting worse. However I like to believe I'm getting wiser as well.

It is caused by lack of protein.

Are you a vegetarian? Do you not eat a lot of meats or protein-ish foods?

It could also be genetics too. Does it run in your family?

theres nothing you can do besides dye it. its caused by your genes. most ppl at some point stop making the pigment that causes your hair color, so without the pigment your hair is either gray or white.

The lack of melotonin causes the loss of pigment (color) in your hair.... and it's also due to stress and genetics
