This may be my fault, but Tarquin (French Poodle) had a bad experience with a lady dog (Rottweiller/Great Dane cros) in his youth. Since then He's only socialised with other male dogs.

I've noticed he likes to get his face near to their backsides, like he wants to rim them - could he be a gay dog?

Is there a test I can do?

If he is gay, are there any gay dog clubs he can go to and be with other gay dogs - listen to some Erasure and lick some balls, etc.?

Well you haven't said where abouts in the worlds you are so I cannot recommend any good gay dog clubs.

But it definitely sounds as if your dog is gay.

There is no test and you cannot make him 'come out'. He can only do this in his own time. Don't pressure him, or even ask him, he could get embarrased or you could upset him if he is not ready to admit it to himself yet. But make it clear to him that you are okay with gay dogs, that you won't think any different of him if he was gay.

I have to say, you may have bought this on yourself by naming him 'Tarquin'. That isn't the most masculine name. :-P And he is a male poodle. That's just asking for a gay dog.
Luckily for Tarquin, being a gay dog is so much more accepted now!

If Tarquin does come out as gay, you should definitely take him to a gay pride celebration where he can meet more gay dogs like himself.

It is possible for some dogs to have a slightly, er, different sexual orientation. But the reason some dogs mount each other (when not breeding, quite obviously) is that they want to assert dominance over the other.

The reason he goes towards other dog's behinds is because he is smelling their anal glands. When dogs were undomesticated, everytime they excreted the anal glands would also provide a sticky, foul-smelling odor to mark the dog's territory. Through domestication, dogs have lost use of this but still use them to identify each other by getting a big whiff or two "in there".

My dog, Abby likes to "hump" pillows. Abby is a she, and I have never considered the fact that she might be bisexual. It really all depends on the way your or any dog's primitive instincts function. So, your dog may either be scared of the female gender, or like you have stated, "Gay".

As far as I know, there are no tests nor clubs for gay dogs.

Good luck with him!

My girl puppy was spayed at 4 months and has sometimes been confused about her sexuality - thinks shes a dog & tries to hump. Lack of hormones for the gender may be a factor. But if the poodle has not been neutured it's just a dog thing, they have a very sensitive sense of smell & all dogs anal areas are smelly to other dogs! He can distinguish between girl or boy dog ( especially if they are not spayed/ neutered) when he meets others, so he probably has some emotional baggage he needs to get over, with a friendly girly dog that has not been spayed! Good Luck

"I've noticed he likes to get his face near to their backsides, like he wants to rim them - could he be a gay "dog? " this is how dogs 'greet' each other, just like humans shake hands etc...
as for the gayness...i don't think that your dog can possibly be gay. him socialising with other male dogs maybe because of his character not past experience...plus maybe there are only male dogs around him and so he's more likely to socialise with them.
you can probably test him by putting him with 2 dogs which he doesn't know, 1 male, 1 female and see which one he interacts more and what he does with a female dog without a male dog and a male dog without a female dog. and then analyse then on.
good luck!
p.s. i don't believe that dogs can really be gay...afterall...there are some instincts such as 'breeding instincts' that prevents one from being 'gay'!

It's just a male thing hang out with the guys be cool. Put him with a b**ch in season and you'll soon find out! Seriously don't do that dogs get locked together when they copulate and you could damage him if you tried to pull him off,and you don't want pups. I thought one of my dogs was gay, he became a dad at 10 (human years) having puppies around put him off women for the rest of his life.

No. Dogs cannot be gay, this is only in fiction. It's very natural for dogs to sniff other dogs in the back region, it's how they learn about each other. And the fact that he's only associated with male dogs is probably just because he hasn't been around a lot of female dogs since the experience. If you were to let him meet a friendly female dog, he'd probably do just as well with her as with the other males.

Get your dog neutered. It will make him a healthier, happier dog all-around.

1. Dogs can be gay. There are gay penguins, flamingoes, why not dogs?
2. Bum-sniffing in dogs is not always indicative of anything. Dogs do that to identify each other.
3. Having an aversion to female dogs is probably a psychological issue. There are pet psychologists.

Your dog's not gay; he's just 'playing the field'!!! One of my Yorkies had a failed 'marriage' last year. She was a lovely 'girl' which he courted but, when it came to it, she went frigid on him!

If your dog IS gay, accept that as his choice... At least you haven't got my problems ... Both my male Yorkies are humping my neutered male Siamese cat regularly. Gay, I can accept - cross species, NEVER!!!

Your dog can be gay. There has not been much research into homosexual animals. Much of the work was focused on humans and you can easily correlate. Let me explain.

There are several theories as to why a person is 'born' gay. The most prominent I have read is a work by Simon Le Vay. He determined - through autopsy - that gay men and straight men have one single difference: the size of their hypothalamus (a gland in the middle of your brain and well known to be the source of sexual stimulation in human beings). With gay men it is small and fluffy were as in straight men, it is solid and large. He repeated this experiment with lesbian and straight women and found the reverse. Straight women had small/fluffy gland were as lesbian has large/denser gland.

Following years of studies, he determined that this gland is developed before birth. When he examined pregnant mothers during period of pregnancy he found that this gland gets developed during the 6th month of pregnancy. If the mother body thinks she has a daughter, she would give Oestrogen (female hormone). If she thinks she has male son, she would give Testosterone (male hormone). For some un-explained reason, the mother would give the wrong hormone. Depending on how long this hormone is given, the child may come up as Bisexual, straight acting gay guy, camp gay guy, or in extreme cases transsexual (a person who believes he is in the wrong body!).

In the Animal kingdom, we assume something similar happens. Homosexual animals have been proved to exist in Lions, Zebras, Bulls, Dolphins, Dogs, and many other animal species. I saw a documentary on National Geo graphic called 'Wild Sex', focusing on this and other unexpected trends in the animal kingdom. For instance, gay/lesbian swans are known to mate for life! In another documentary that I also happen to see was shown on TV 4 about two years ago called 'Gay animals', discussed an experiment on a gay bull in Texas. They isolated the bull during the mating season, so as to make the animal desperate for sex. Then they released him to only 10 cows. As much starved and agitated for sex, the bull would only bully the cows but would never mate with them. They even tried to force it to mate, but would not work. Two weeks passed and nothing changed. Then they released another bull hoping the gay bull would learn, and as expected the gay bull would only try to mount the straight bull! Gay animals have been around for many years, but traditionally were only explained these animals are just confused! I feel sorry for your dog….Maybe a new gay animal dating website needs to be set up!

Regards, - See my references.
