Look at the label of energy drinks, because some have all of the ingredients below and some have only some of those.

The ingredient that gives Red Bull its name is taurine. From experience, taurine gives a very high energy boost that is impossible to ignore. It also comes down in a couple of hours.
L-carnitine is a bit subtler and longer lasting, but the effect is similar. It seems to last a little longer. Both are sometimes described as amino acids. Both used to give me fierce indigestion.
The third unusual ingredient to energy drinks is chromium picolinate. In large amounts this can make you mildly nauseous, but in the trace amounts your body needs it keeps your blood sugar level and regulated. For this reason you often find it in 'Carb Smart' vitamins, as it's useful for dieters to get rid of sugar cravings.
Many drinks contain sugar and caffeine, both of which will give you the feeling of energy. Sugar (especially in large amounts) will make you hyper fast as your body metabolizes it quickly, then leave you with a 'crash' as insulin kicks in. Caffeine raises blood pressure and released sugar into your bloodstream, doubling the kick.
