At most a card. You already gave a gift. Additionally, many businesses prohibit gifts from subordinates to their boss unless there is an existing personal relationship.

If you are your boss' only direct report employee, and the rest of the gift givers are members of a larger office community (eg, the accounting department), then it would be nice to bring along something SMALL and appropriate. When leaving one company for another, one of my employees gave me a stationery set and reminded me to keep in touch -- pre-Email days of course! It was a thoughtful, thought-out gift that showed care, without going overboard.

However, if your professional relationship is on a par with the other gift givers/office staff, giving a separate gift might seem a little like overkill and/or brown nosing. If you have enjoyed a good professional relationship, a sincere heartfelt card and personalized inscription will be appropriate.

If your relationship encompasses friendship, then you'll expect to continue seeing the guy after retirement. Again, a separate gift would be redundant (but not inappropriate). I would still limit myself to a card.

What will be remembered best is the sentiment you express. If you tell your boss how much you've learned from working with him/her (and a specific reason why) it will be very much appreciated.

Depends on how long you've worked together and how closely you worked together, but for the most part I'd say the group gift should be sufficient unless you were really close. A personalized card wishing him well might be a nice touch though, especially if you think you might want a reference some day.

Expected, probably not, but if you actually like the guy, you could bring him a bottle of some nice booze, Grey Goose is my suggestion.
