I could write about this topic forever and ever however, in the grace of time, there are two very important aspects I believe are essential of a professional in education. 1) The educator should be trained in the field of study, open and willing to continue to learn as the world is ever changing - so is education. 2) This is one that I believe is the most important and I saved it for last - the educator must have a TRUE LOVE for children and bring to the table an excitement and desire to reach those that the world will probably give up on. In our world, nobody is perfect. I teach 175 students per day in Language, Reading, Speech, Linguistics - and tutor. But a whole school of faces from the 5th grade to the 8th grade are influenced by what they 'see' in me. And these are just several of the areas in which I was trained. I have found myself serving throughout the course of any day, as a counselor, music teacher, voice coach, physician (bandaging bruises), psychologist, mother, nuturer, financier or loan officer (students needing lunch money or bus fare), cosmotologist (students who have come crying because they didn't have a comb and would not go to class with unkept hair); parent advisor; basketball coach, cheerleader coach, dance coach, musician (students who need to audtion and have no one to play for them - and I just happen to play piano), a listening ear, a driver (students who get left behind and need a ride home), a chef (having to take whatever is in the fridge and make something for kids staying late at school to eat) - I guess you get the idea....your children are your most important entity. There are kids who are troubled emotionally, financially; kids who are socially unacceptable by their peers, kids who are special and need extra instruction and care, kids who are bullied at home and school, kids who come bruised mentally, emotionally and sometimes physically, and yet - you, as a professional must love this game. In spite of the low pay, in spite of little recognition, you realize that you are going to influence and change a life - good or bad - and if you are anointed to do you work - you will do it well and with a smile - and you will shed tears of joy when you see that eighth grader that someone else gave up on, walk across that stage and receive his or her diploma with honors because you said something that changed their way of thinking about themselves. It's a great job and I love it -
