anybody know the difference between the dcr-sr50 and the dcr-sr30? they seem so alike to me

Go for the more expensive one. There's only about £50 difference but when you read the leaflet that comes with it, lots of the add-on extras (flash etc) can't be used with the cheap one. Think the recording time is shorter, too! I know, I bought the cheapie. Still a great cam, though!
