Yes Dalmatians are excellent dogs to get. But, they aren't the perfect dog for everyone. They need lots and lots of exercise to stay happy. If you do not walk them enough or you leave them for long periods of time, they get VERY destructive. They are very loyal, loving, sweet, gentle family dogs. They hate being alone and they hate being away from the family, or "pack". Due to the movie "101 Dalmatians", all BYBs starting breeding them. They are the Dals you want to stay away from. You must find a reputable breeder and you have to research that line so you know that there are no aggressive dogs in that line. Dals are really great with kids and cats if you get one from a line with Dals with excellent temperaments. You really must socialize them at a young age so they don't become shy, aggressive, overly protective or skittish when they are older. Dals have a lot of health problems so you MUST research everything there is to know about the breed, before you go out and buy one. You can trust most Dals off the leash but they LOVE to RUN and ESCAPE so it's always better to keep your Dal on the leash when going for walks, going to the park etc. They shed a lot. When I say a lot, I really mean a LOT. They also have a really bad doggy odor. You must bathe them a fair bir (not too often or else they will lose their natural skin oils) and you have to brush them everyday.
I hope you make the right decision if you want to own one of these beautiful dogs.
Good luck!
Edit: They are a little slow to learn but with patience, they can do very well in obedience classes. They are fairly easy to housebreak but need a bit of patience from their owner. Also, when you buy one (from the REPUTABLE BREEDER), make sure the pups are BAER tested so you know the pup is not deaf. As you probably already know, a lot of Dals now are becoming deaf, this is due to all the irresponsible breeding of these beautiful dogs.

It really depends on both your lifestyle and the individual dog.
Dalmatians tend to be very high energy dogs that need a good amount of exercise. They are good watchdogs that sound the alarm when someone comes, but aren't typically aggressive. They are prone to a multitude of health problems, particularly deafness. They also have a tendency to have very different personalities among individuals, and some are very high-strung.
If you get a dalmatian from a reputable breeder and give it lots of socialization and training, you might get a great dog out of it. But if it's from a poor breeder or if you're not experienced with raising dogs well, you may end up with a nasty, aggressive, and high-strung dog.

If you like high energy dogs. Dalmations are action dogs and you have to keep them active, that is why they are good fire department dogs. If you are a very active person and love to exercise that would be a good dog for you if not you need to find a different breed of dog such as basset hound or something like that.

What do you want from the dog? If you want a lap dog or a dog that will be content staying at home this is not your dog. If you are active and have lots of room this MAY be a good choice for you. There are no good dogs or bad dogs, just bad or good owner-dog match-ups. Read up more about the grooming and exercise needs as well as its temperment, theycan be difficult for the inexperienced dog owner.
Make sure you two are a good match for each other, every dog is different, it is not fair to the dog to be adpted only to be given up later because their owner didn't make a good choice.

Yes but they need a LOT of exercise. They also need a special diet. A dal's urinary tract is similar to a horse or humans, not other dogs. You should not feed them the high quality stuff everyone (including me) raves about, like Innova EVO or Timberwolf Organics. It is too high in protein and will give them bladder stones. I feed my dalmatian Purina because it is mosly made of grain. Also, they are prone to skin allergies so do not give them anything with dye in it. Because of the Disney movie "101 Dalmatians" there has been a lot of bad breeding done and so yes, a lot of dalmatians are not very nice. You need to get one from a good show breeder or a rescue where the dogs are screened for temperment.

Dalmations may be good for one type of household and not good for another. This all depends on your lifestyle.
Dalmations are full of energy but very lovable.

You have to commit to training them well and walking them everyday...otherwise they can get snappy and yappy! But when brought up well they are great dogs. And remember, Dalmations shed alot! and tend to have skin allergies.
