Whats a good valentines day craft?

I have to teach art class for kids in Kindergarden through sixth grade.. I need some suggestions for a craft and maybe a short story to go with it. It should be based on valentines day (hearts,cupid..).

I think almost all kids like to make gifts for other people. I just did an activity with my son's class where they made Valentine's cards out of construction paper and faux-lace doileys (or however you spell that). Hallmark has packs of 20 for about $2.00, but I'm sure they are even cheaper other places. The only other materials you should need are markers or crayons and glue.

When I taught pre-school & kindergarten, I would plan a Valentine's Day Tea Party. In preparation each child would make a Valentine holder, usually two heavy pieces of paper shaped like hearts. They could decorate the hearts how they liked and then I would punch holes around the sides and bottom and they would sew them together with yarn of their choice. (great fine motor skills excercise)

Then on V day, at the start of the day, we would have tea and treats, not too much sugar and ask parents to stay a bit. It was a nice social time, and a nice way to visit and spend little bit of time with parents and have them spend time with each other too. Each child would bring a valentine for everyone in the class.

Also, mkaing valentines is fun, too. The store bought ones can be so generic and kids come up with such wonderful creative ideas for their valentines...

A good Valentine's Day craft is something that's made from the heart. It's something you can't buy from the store. Something like a clay model of a heart with something nice carved into it. Also you can make a card with a Valentine that goes with it for someone you love...or you could bake cookie hearts ofr all the children and then they can decorate them...maybe you can help the 4th-6th garders with that and then do something simple for K-3rd............

I made these with my kids and used them for tags on valentine gift bags for kids at their daycare.

Place a piece of construction paper (red, white, purple, pink) in the bottom of a rectangular pan or shoe box. Drip some paint onto the paper in different spots. Drop one or two marbles into the pan. Have the kids tip and jiggle the pan to swirl the marbles through the paint making a design on the paper.

I made heart shapes on the computer and printed it out with my kids' pictures in the shape with their names on it. I glued the print-out to the construction paper once they were dry. I cut out the heart shapes and punched holes in the top.

I used cellophane goody bags filled with a few pieces of candy (gummy hearts, chocolate hearts, peppermint salt water taffy), stickers, and a fun pencil. Attach the homemade tag to the goody bag with a twist tie. I found all the stuff at Dollar Tree for a dollar a piece.

The kids had fun shaking the box around. The picture of the kids add a nice touch because the kids at daycare probably won't be able to read who the valentine is from, so they will know because of their pictures.

Paint

Any kind of colored construction paper

Ribbon


How To Make It


You just need your two hands and dab them in the green paint. The hands need to go all the way around in the shape of a wreath.
When that is done you need some paintbrushes. You need to make berries with a little red paint -- dab the brush in it and make little dots all over the wreath.
When that is finished you can get some real ribbon, blue or purple. And carefully glue the ribbon on the wreath. That is mostly what you need to do!


Tips


Try other combinations of colors, like white hands with red hearts for Valentines Day.

As for a story to go with it....

The kids could each write out a paragraph or poem of their own sharing something that they love. They could write it inside their own handprint or you could even have them cut out their handprints, have them write their selection on it and make a mobile out of it to be put in the school office.

we have made bugs out of various sized hearts (body, wings, feet, etc) we have also taken plain white pillowcases and decorated them with glitter paint using heart shaped sponges and/or handprints. these turn out very cute for holding valentines and can be used again. this year we are encouraging parents to work with their children at home to make/decorate a box to hold valentines. we will use this as an opportunity to talk about family and the importance of giving and caring for others.

This is a darling project and simple to do. Find soft red fabric and stuffing. Cut two equal hearts out of the fabric. Put them together and sew three quarters of the way closed. Have the children decorate with whatever you have on hand...roly poly eyes, glitter, little balls, etc. Have them place the stuffing in the heart with a special note stating all the special people in their life that they love. Quick stitch it together. Place it in their hands, spin them around and have them make a special wish for the names of the people inside the heart. They can then take it home and sleep with their new heart shaped pillow.

For little ones, get skinny shoestring licorice and all kinds of food and candies with holes, gummy life savers, pretzels, cheerio's, fruit loops, etc. Get creative. Have them make the necklace and then tie it! Enjoy...and be sure to stay away from peanut products!!!

you will need tenfoil, elmers glue, food coloring, and a piece of sewing string tied in a loop. make the tenfoil in the shape of anything... like a heart for valentines. make sure the walls on the foil are about and inch high. pour glue into the mold. put in a few drops of different or the same food coloring to add color. stir in with a toothpick. place string on the top when it is wet it will dry and you can hang it. let it dry, peel away tenfoil. iono its cheap and kids should get into it.
