My roommate has a cat that he believes is better off NOT getting neutered, his shots or his nails removed. Maybe he's right about the nails, but it's wrecking my furniture! The cat is miserable, hes crying all day and all night, he sheds pounds of hair everyday. Is there anything I can do to help besides what I'm trying to do? (trying to convince him to get him neutered) Is there anything to save my furniture, I already have one chair thats basically his scratching post. The cat won't use toys or normal scratching posts. He doesn't spray, he won't shutup.
Excuse my misspelling
Thankyou

Firstly, you might go to HSUS.org and print out some fact sheets for your roomate.
Next, fill him in on the pros of getting boy cat neutered :
it reduces:
wandering
scratching ( sometimes)
spraying
marking
chances of testicular cancer
and unwanted kittens, who usually either die of cold or malnutrition, evil people, speeding cars, or, should they be lucky enought to be picked up animal control, put to sleep for the mere crime of not having a home.
You can get a low cost spay neuter certificate to save roomie $$$ at www.friendsofanimals.org

the cons to getting boy cat neutered? None.

Keep the cat, lose the roommate... Kitty needs to be neutered - that will calm him down a little, as well as possibly help with the constant crying. Is he part Siamese? Some of them just talk constantly, nothing you can do about it. As far as getting his shots, if he's going to be strictly indoors, the vet should not require he get anything other than a rabies shot (required by state law in my state at least) when he goes to get fixed. Find out what kind of scratching post appeals to him. Most cats ignore the carpeted ones, and besides, who wants to teach them to scratch on the carpet? A piece of wood covered in tightly wound sisal rope is the best, and make sure it is long enough or tall enough so kitty can extend himself fully while scratching on it. Most cats prefer vertical scratching, but some like horizontal. You don't say how old he is, but the younger you start them on a proper scratching post, the better. Instead of yelling at him to stop scratching the chair, approach him gently and take him to the new scratching post and show him how to use it. Rub catnip all over it, and he'll like it even better. Sounds like kitty needs more attention from your roommate, to get him interested in things a cat should be doing, rather than shredding your furniture!

It sounds to me like your roommate would be better off not having the cat. There are some pink caps you can buy from the vet that slips over the cat's nails that prevent it from ruining your furniture. Some male cats are continuous talkers. This is one way they find their females. If the cat is a long haired cat, they appear to shed more than normal because of the hair length. If you have a garage, you might put it out there for awhile., if not, keep putting the cat in your roommate's room and close the door. This will many times convince the person to do something. Trust me. Nagging doesn't work.

Just keep on trying to convince your roomy to get his cat neutered, asap. It will be in his, yours and the cats best interest. As far as the clawing every thing. Get a scratching post, or a small log. I used to find small logs and use them for scratching posts along with regular scratching posts when I had 6 cats with all of their claws. I had a scratching post or log in each room of the house. I drew them to their logs and scratching posts by using cat nip spray. I would also put a few treats on top of the log or post. The cats would have to climb up to the top of the poll/log to get their treat. That way, they knew they could dig on those. You can find cat nip spray at any pet store. You might even consider covering the couch and chairs with old sheets or blankets? You could get a spray bottle, put some water in it and when you see the cat ready to scratch on your furniture, spray him in the face and yell at him to stop. Cats hate water, especially in the face. I hope this helps, just keep on your roomy to get this cat fixed asap. If he waits, the cat will start spraying around the house. That's worse than scratching every thing in site. Good luck!

well you have a troubleson problem that is for sure. is he the only cat? he may be lonely, maybe getting him a female THAT IS SPAYED would help him a bit. he would have the comanionship and would be able to have someone to play with and wont need to scratch at everything.plus if he feels the need to release some "pressure", then he can on her and you wont have to worry about her getting prego.
as for the furnature stuff that sucks. there is a spray that you can get that you spray where you dont want your cat scratching and it is supposed to keep them away. try that. or get the scratching posts or boxes and sprinkle a little bit of cat nip on there that might attract him to it more.as for him loosing tons of hair i would be a bit worried about that...that isnt normal unless its just a healthy shed but from the sounds of it he is stressed and that isnt good. you have to find a way to disstress him. try more love and attention and play time. another cat might help like i said before.
you can clip his nails. get yourself a nice pair of cat clippers from the store and wrap kittty up and pull out one paw at a time and just clip the tips so that he isnt doing a TON of damage. i find it easier with my kittys if someone else holds them and then i just go quick one paw at a time and clip while they are getting pet. also you could try soft claws...most vets will put them on for you if you cant do it...maybe if the vet puts them on you can convice your room mate that since you are already there he could just do shots then. if he is worried about the cost animart, humaine societys, and other pet stores run deals were you can get shots for like 10.00 a piece and also spay and neuter for like under 25 dollars i think males are like 15. you can have it all done at the same time!!
when my female went into heat she would cry and i would cry back at her and after a little while she would stop. she would start again eventually but i kept on with it till she was out of heat. good luck and let me know how it turns out.

i would get this spray called boundary (sp?) it should save your furniture. it smells funny at first, kind of like strong starch, but it should help. it works for our cat that likes to leave presents on the couch.

as for the toys, spray/sprinkle some catnip. then it'll know to go there for some fun.

as for the other issue, there's no other way to satisfy that type of hunger. your roommate will need to decide to either keep it in the room while he crys and is in the mood. OR get it fixed.
