For reasons I can't explain I have always overslept. Being a teenager it was no problem because just about every teenager on the planet did it. But now I'm almost 24, have had a job for roughly a year and my life is coming together. Except now I REALLY oversleep. Even as I write this I've had about 12 hours of sleep or so, and thats about average for me right now. I have four alarm clocks in my room, including my cell phone, and I always manage to subconsciously get up, turn them off, and go back to bed. My girlfriend even calls me to wake me up but most of the time I don't even remember her calling. I've never missed a day of work but I know it's going to happen. I want to get up early so I have more time to do things, like study for the driving exam or do some much-needed yard work. It'd rather hit this problem before it grows too big to handle. So if anyone has any suggestions I'd like to hear 'em. Maybe this is a medical condition and I'm not aware of it.

Could be you have something like sleep apnea in which your sleep is disturbed so you never get much quality sleep. Your body makes up for it by getting more quantity sleep. It might be worth going to a sleep clinic (talk to your regular doctor for a referral).

It could be that you are suffering from depression (if you are experiencing other symptoms). I know that a reluctance to wake up and an excess of sleep was one of my symptoms when I was suffering depression.

Try drinking a bunch of water before you go to bed. (This is a tactic used by Native Americans preparing for pre-dawn raids on their enemies and used by modern Marines who have to be up for watch without the benefit of alarm clocks). I find that this works very well for me. Cold bathroom tiles have a way of waking you up too.

Make sure there's no excess noise in your bedroom (don't fall asleep with the TV on)

Leave the blinds open, the sunlight will help wake you up.

Get a dog, the penalty of not taking Fido for his morning walk is dire enough to get you out of bed (ok, this one is a joke)

Switch up the ring tones on your cell phone on a semi-regular basis. I find that changing to a new ring means it doesn't 'register' the same as previous alarms.

Have your girlfriend blow a whistle into the phone.

Look into getting one of the alarm clocks for the hard of hearing. For the deaf they actually make alarm clocks with vibrating pads to put beneath your pillow.

Throw the covers on the floor when you get up to turn on the snooze. A bed is less attractive when it's cold.

Stagger the times that your alarm clocks go off so that one or another is going off every two minutes or so.

Place the alarm clocks in different areas of the room. By the time you figure out which one is ringing you will be a little more awake.

Hope this helps

My husband is the same way. He like "needs" 9-12 hours of sleep a day. It's a hard thing to change. Try eating healthier. A healthier diet will make you feel energized, so you wont need so much sleep. Also, exercising gives you energy. So exercise when you get up. Having a set bedtime helps. I've noticed with my husband, he goes to bed at different times of the day, but if he wants to get up early he just cannot do it, unless it's important. Try to find something in your life (aside from work) that will make you feel you "need" to get up. Give yourself "chores" that must be done. When I tell my husband "you absolutely HAVE to get this done" it helps.
