Get out and vounteer with an organization committed to serving others. If you have a commitment to be there at specific times, it will draw you out of the house where you can meet other people and be concerned about others, rather than staying at home worrying about you and your loneliness.

Go to where there are a lot of people. For instance, pubs, clubs, dance classes (that's a very good one, try the Salsa!), and so on.

Listening to music is always inspirational! If you like staying in, interact with those about on the internet.
In the summer when it's warmer, go out to places, and visit where you like most.

Company mainly. Try internet messageboards, ones based on a interest of yours. Sport or TV or whatever. If it's TV I have a few places I could send you too. Communities on messageboards are fantastic, I have loads of friends from them, there like family to me.

Volunteer your time at a place you find interesting (example: if you like to read, go to the library). You will meet people there with common interests.

get a pet (the one to your liking)
volunteer
join a club or organization of something you might like to do
a part time job (the extra money wouldn't hurt)
