Your health coverage probably has exclusions, and/or limits on payment to cover injuries from an accident in a motor vehicle, especially one you own. All medical expenses, including the ambulance, and my expensive neurosurgery, from my accident in 1995 were paid by my auto policy. The follow-up treatments were paid by health care.

Injuries from an auto accident will be paid by your car insurance not your medical insurance. It is part of the policy anyway. When a medical plan suspects injuries from an auto accident they will deny the claim and return it to you and ask you to file it to your auto carrier. I use to work for a Health claim office paying medical bills. Some plans will pick up any balance due if the auto insurance doesn't cover the balance but in most cases they do.

Because the majority of health insurance companies DO NOT COVER medical treatment received as a result of an auto accident.
And by the way, Medical Payments on your auto policy is a 1st party coverage....it only covers persons INSIDE, GETTING OUT OF/ENTERING your vehicle (whether they have health insurance or not). Medical Payments and/or PIP coverage DOES NOT COVER persons in the other vehicle involved in the accident, cyclists, pedestrian, etc....if you rear end someone & the person you hit is hurt, Medical Payments doesn't cover them.

Two separate issues, no 1...will your medical insurance from work cover any portion of your lost wages if you are in a car crash, your auto insurance will. No 2...got anyone with you who was injured? Is your medical insurance from work stepping up to take care of them as well as you? I didn't think so. You need the coverage.

Well, it's wonderful you have medical at work. Will it cover the person you hit if an accident is your fault? No? Well, I guess you need coverage on your auto insurance then.

Some health insurance companies will not pay if in any motor vehicle accident - also, your passengers may not have health insurance.
In most states medical payments for yourself is not required, but since its generally inexpensive - keep it. Better safe than sorry.

Your auto insurance would cover if the accident was your fault and the other driver/passengers got hurt. Your medical insurance only covers you.

They are both different. Health insurance covers your injuries treatment and hospital etc. Your car insurance covers your vehicle claims and repair. Last thing you want it you got the money to treat your injuries but got to worry about the money to get your car (or the other party) repair!
