Check out your local volunteer center. They have many different contacts with many non-profit agencies throughout your community. Many of them will have additional resources for your school or school club to put together a wide variety of community projects. You can also get many great ideas for additional projects and contacts and referrals to various other agencies as well.

I like to suggest volunteer centers through the Hands On Network:

You can also find volunteer centers through the Points of Light Foundation:
http://pointsoflight.org/centers/find_center.cfm

The Points of Light Foundation also has a great resource library to help you out:

The Points of Light Foundation offers coursework in volunteer management and youth leadership that may also be beneficial as you work through some of your projects.

Good Luck!

I recommend working with developmentally challenged kids. I did and it was a wonderful experience. They taught me so much. Also old folks homes are a good idea, but it's really very sad and hard work. Animal shelters, the red cross, and food drives are also good ideas. You might want to try calling into a help hot line and asking the person who answers the phone how you can get involved. I thank you for wanting to volunteer, you're a good person.

Tutoring. Most public libraries have tutoring services for illiterate people and people who do not speak English well. Pretty much anyone who speaks English well can help, and most of these programs are pretty desperate for help. All it takes is an hour a week in most cases. If that is too much, however, there may be tutoring opportunities of all sorts at your school, too!

why dont you run an ad in the paper ( from trees ) and advertise a carwash to raise money for the homeless ( the carwash detergent will be good for the environment ) and you can buy the homeless people some 40's and then when they get drunk and pass out you can take the bottles back to the store and use the money to buy toys for needy kids that dont have much, and after thier parents throw them out because they never take care of them you can dumpster dive and donate the toys back to goodwill and get a nice tax deduction.

thus completing the circle of life.

What about a fundraiser for a local animal shelter? Or you guys could go there for a day...a fun thing you could do is go to the shelter, take pictures of some of the dogs, and then go make fliers for them and post the fliers around town at pet stores, vet offices, etc. I knwo you all will really love it!

When I was in the fire dept, the "Rotary Club", collected money and donated a "HURST TOOL" (It's a hydraulic pump with huge cutters on it) to us. I wonder if they ever knew how many lives it saved in the middle of the night when we used to cut an injured person out of a bad car crash, to get them into the ambulance. I think it was the best give anyone could ever give !

If you want to spend more than 1 day accomplishing something....teach some people to read. Not talking about kids....adults. Start an adult literacy program. Well worth the effort.
