Its called sleep paralysis and is quite common. The brain is asleep on one level but part of it still remains aware of surroundings.
I am an ex nurse and in the profession its known as night nurse paralysis, yes I have had it and its very scarey;

This as happened to me on a regularly basis all of my life and honestly once you get used to it and just let it happen it can actually be really enjoyable it is like being awake when you are not conscious and all the information your mind holds that can't normally be retrieved is there ready to be accessed, the last time it happen to me i could hear a fully orchestra loud and clear in my mind and it was amazing especially as it is not something i would normally listen to. Just so you know i was not on drugs or alchol either. You are still asleep and that's why you can't open your eyes or move its just your mind goes into some sort of different consciousness were you are more aware. As long as you don't have any other symptoms happening that might make it a medical thing just go with it if it happens again you will be surprised by what you can experience.

I have had it and I think but not sure but I think it is called catatonic, it is when people are pronounced dead and buried but actually are still alive. It is the most awful feeling I have been through, because you know you are there awake and yet cant do anything at all. Your brain works and you know your body should work but nothing happens, you have my sympathy coz I know what it is like. What a lot of silly answers. Believe me it is when people go into such a deep sleep their body closes down and they get buried with people thing they are dead.. These people are just lazy and cant open their eyes thats all, what you describe is totally different.

Nothing to worry about. During sleep stages your body gets to point where it loses muscle control.OTHERWISE you'd dream and move around physically in the real world. which as you can imagine would be a disaster!

Being "awake" at this point is similar to "lucid dreaming". In other words its a really useful time to think about problems. Its a very creative time. Nothing to be scared of. Just make sure you have a pen and paper handy to write down your ideas when you wake up.

If you want to learn more about this I'd recommend finding books on creative thinking.

Like I say - test it on your own problems and take it from there.
Enjoy it - you never know - you may have discovered a new talent?

Sleep well!

Yes I have expeienced this. It is the most horrible thing cause I cant open m eyes. I even try throwing myself downstairs or out the window to wake up. Then it seems like you drift off then wake up for real and you havent moved at all. Really hate them and pray every night that I wont have them. Cause whrn i do it plays on my mind for days. Dont know what causes them I went through a stage of having them often then none for ages. Hope i dont have one tonight now.
Thanks to the nurse for her explanation. Thought it only happened to me.

Yes. The worse experience of this happened about 2 weeks ago. I'm awake with my eyes closed, everything is black. As I proceed to wake myself up by trying to open my eyes it's taking longer than expected. I began to freak out, and can feel my breathing slowing then stop. I keep trying to get myself to breath, I finally do, and wake up. That was creepy! Normally I'm able to wake myself up when that happens.

I have experienced this since my childhood. I'm a trained hypnotist and see parrallels to the altered conscious states of mind that people can get via hypnosis. When hypnotised we still have our conscious mind present, even if our body is flat out etc. The difference from Sleep Paralysis is that with hypnosis someone else is directing our attention and thoughts.

With Sleep Paralysis we don't have anyone communicating with us, just our semi-conscious state.

I encourage you to get hypnotised so that you will have more conscious control over your state. It's helped me to feel it as much more normal without any fear, which I used to get from it when I was younger.

Check this out. This is called a translucent state of being. I use to do this more often in the middle of the day while napping. Now this is the fun part. When your in this state of being make your soul sit up, yes, you can get out of body at this time. Walk around the room. Now, the tricky part is getting back in. Don't panic. Go back in through your feet. I know your thinking your nutz, but I swear it works. Out of Body Experience!!! You can feel your sould ripping apart from your body if you make it sit up.

I have been getting this for years, when I am really really tired usually. It is called sleep paralysis, the scariest thing ever to happen to me. The Doctor said there wasn't much he could do, just told me to get plenty of sleep etc. Although after it happens, I can't sleep for ages, so it happens again. Truly sympathize, but don't worry, it is very scary, but not life threatening.

you were asleep, I have had this loads. I am laying in bed but can't get up or open my eyes, it's not nice. I then wake up later and remember it but then realise it was a dream. I once had this thing where I was laying in bed and I opened my eyes and there was someone stood at the end of my bed, I woke up later and realised it was a dream but it does seem really real, if that all makes sense!

Hi,this is called sleep paralysis.Basically, your mind wakes up before your body and it can be very scary but if you just try and relax it will pass after a couple of minutes.I had this experience every couple of weeks when I was a teenager but not since.
