Las Virgenes Unified School District.

Many schools in that district serve Calabasas and Agoura Hills. It's not crowded like LAUSD and many of the schools are renowned "California Distinguished" or "National Blue Ribbon" schools.
Then there are the other school districts like Beverly Hills USD that serves the wealthy and known as one of the "best" because of that.

El Segundo, it's next to LAX and surrounded by the aerospace industry, Standard Oil and the Pacific Ocean so the city is like Mayberry in the middle of LA. The school district has always been rated very highly probably due to the seclusion and the tax base of all the companies there.

La Canada. Because it is a very wealthy area, schools are not overcrowded, and the school district has lots of money.

It all depends on what you are looking for. And what part of L.A. Go to this website....
http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/ac/sa/
They have the SARC (school accountability report card) scores for all the schools (elementary, middle and high school) by name. It breaks down test scores, ethnicities in the school, expulsions, etc. Very imformative!

Anything other than LAUSD...it is far too big and badly managed. Try Culver City, Lawndale, Hawthorne...they are smaller and seperate from LAUSD
