Hi all -

I've always been curious about my last name and more about where I'm from/my family history. I have no idea how to go about researching this though. Could anyone give me any ideas/advice or what they might know of my name? Besides that it's clearly italian... Pittiglio

Check it out with the surname link under the Gene Links on this site. It won't cost you a fortune cos it's free.

Good luck, but I have to echo the others, it does sound very Italian.

The first place to start is to ask your parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts, great-grandparents, etc. about their history, where they were born, when they were born, where they lived, what they did, when they died, what they remember about those who came before, etc. It's not all going to be accurate, but it's always the best place to start.

As you know, the name Pittiglio is Italian. Most (but of course not all) Italians came to the U.S. between 1880-1920. Depending on your age, your family has prob. been in the U.S. for a few generations, so it wouldn't be surprising if the immigrant Pittiglio is within the living memory of one of your older relatives. Once you have a name and approx. year/place of immigration, you can check immigration records. All Ellis Island records, for instance, are available on line. In addition to giving the name, place, and manner of immigration, these records usually include the age and place of immigration.

Once you have the town in Italy, you can get many Italian records from LDS Family History Centers, and continue from there.

The first place to start is from your family. Ask as many people as you can and find out as much information as you can. Then try and track it like a path backwards to your ancestors. You may be surprised, the name could have been changed over years. I have found alterations in names many times. You see before the 1900's people only learnt to read and write when they were sent to school or taught. Therefore, alot of people only knew how words sounded, and sometimes these were written down how the person writing it thought it should be spelt from the said word.

Use the one-step search for the Ellis Island web site. The Pittiglio listed come mostly from the Cassino and Caserta areas of Italy, between Rome and Naples, but you really have to look for your own family to be certain.
