Dear friend,I am a man of the region and of sunni sect and have a number of shiite members in my whole family(six of my cousins are shiite). As a matter of fact there is not a huge discrepancy between sunni and shiite creeds as it is reported in the western media, because they all believe the same sacred things, but their way of worshipping is a bit different. All those killings and attacks(perhaps you wouldn't believe me) are organised by (no offence please) American or British intelligence services for fear of a total Iraqi resistence against them.As for the Kurds, they speak a language made up mostly Iranian in a way that a Kurd and an Iranian can understand eachother even if each of them speaks their mother tongues. There are many Arabic and Turkish words in it as well.Kurds are a mixture of a number of nations as their language such that the Kurdish language spoken in one town is not understandable for Kurds living in another town. However, big (western)countries have always manipulated Kurds so that their benefits from the region would go on.For instance, some Kurdish terrorist attacks are carried out in touristic areas of Turkey during the tourism season and this is backed up by some Mediterranean countries which earn much from tourism in the Mediterranean region, they were supported by America and England against Saddam during the Gulf War and the invasion and lastly, they are being backed up against Iran.In fact,in this region ethnicity isn't so importand as you think and you would really be surprised to see so many bilingual or three lingual people here and they couldn't tell their ethnic origin. Now they are killing each other for the reasons which had never mattered before without realising that big American and British oil companies are making conracts to have the right to sell % 75 of Iraqi petrol.
Meanwhil, western people are thinking we ,the people of the region, are very undeveloped and barbaric because we are killing each other because of our religious and ethnic origins.
I know it is too wordy.Sorr for that.
Take care.

Iraq (like all of Africa & many other places) has had a multitude of indigenous peoples who were there before the country was invented & created. All humans are descended from tribes that came from far, far away. Most of the modern day countries had a king or colonial government and a coloniser working together, and gradual change ever since has left the country in the same shape until today. The Ottoman Empire was never divided up along ethnic lines - unlike the intentions of the Austro-Hungarian Empire breakup, and so Iraq has been there for the taking.

Interestingly, neighbouring Syria also had a "Ba'athist" insurgency seize power in the 1960s, but the subsequent purges of one marginal group after another in both countries has left Iraq run bu its Sunni Arab minority (until now) & Syria by its non-Sunni-Arab minorities (Allawis, Christians, Druze, etc. - this was started by the French), and ideological differences apparently also emerged over time, though bith were active in the left-secular Pan-Arab movement with Egypt. So it wasn't until the Kuwait war that they finally became sworn all-out enemies like China & the Soviet Union.

The real Iraqi people are the Iraqi people. They are all the same people.

All this stupid Shia, Sunni wars are mostly Iran's fault, also Alqaida does not help either.

Iran is trying to weaken United States and the poor Iraqis are paying for it. Same with people of Iran 90% of whom hate their government.

By the way Iran was a Sunni country till 600 years ago, the Shia relegion was forced on them.

as I understand it Iraq was made up of Kurds in the north, Sunnis in the eastern/central part of Iraq and Shias in the south. I don't know if there's a straight answer to your question.

there is no "true Iraqi people" Iraq was created by the british after WWII when they took over what was left of the ottoman empire. When they drew Iraq borders they did so based on where the oil was not where the people were so that is how they ended up with these different ethnic groups lumped together.

Iraq is a made-up country.

There *are* no "rulers" of Iraq, there *is* no Iraqi government.

NOW are you beginning to see the quagmire bush has created? Why there IS no "winning" this war?

THE ONLY THING HOLDING IRAQ TOGETHER WAS SADDAM.

Majority Shi'ite. In Saddam's era the Sunnis were running a minority rule but now the PM and the top brass are (rightfully) Shi'ite.
