I am baking a dessert and I would like to substitute butter for shortening in the recipe. What is the substitution ratio from shortening to butter? The recipe calls for 1/2 c. of shortening.

Whenever I substitute those two ingredients I just use the same amount and it works just fine! Shouldn't be a problem. Sometimes the butter flavor can really make a difference in a recipe-- except for pie crust. Use shortening for that!

Shortening is 100% fat and butter is around 80% fat so you have to boost the amount of fat in your recipe by 20%.

It's equal amounts - but the butter may change the flavour in the recipe.

In the superstore, fruits are usually selected far too soon. Some are rocks, many are bad. Some of the fruit and vegetables are right (zucchini, onions, garlic, lettuce, greens, and a few others) so I'd have to go with vegetables.
