it is amazing how people answer things and have no clue what is right. They have not lowered standards to get into military and if anything they are making them harder. The Air Force has to cut 40,000 jobs so why are they lowering standards.
Now for your question. It all depends what you went to jail for. Did your buddy get thrown in jail for drinking, or did he have a armed robbery robbing a bank. Just makes a big difference on what the crime was!

Start by talking to a recruiter. Some felonies are accepted and others are not. You can not join while you are on probation. After you have came off of probation, there is a waiting period that you are forced to complete until you are eligible. Different crimes relate to different time frames. There is also the availability that the recruiter can work with the local PA to have a judge downgrade the charges or lessen the time on parole in exchange for enlisting in the military. This is a situation where the recruiter will be very upfront. They will not waste their time trying to enlist someone that is not eligible.

Yes, I served in the special forces with a guy (who I would trust with my own life) who had a criminal record and had been told by a judge that either he would join the military or wind up in prision. Not all men are created equal however.

depends on the crime. The military has a list of crimes that are automatic disqualifications. Some of these can be waviered and some can not. Ask a recruiter.
