So, I know the bar is 2cm long, and the woman said that 8mm would be good for me when its healed, and I assumed that was how long. Now I see they come in different gages like ear rings and things do, so what gage is the normal starting size??

Typical gauge is 14g, but the tongue can be stretched. Length of the barbell should be fitting to your tongue. Everyone is different, so you'll want to get something snug, but not TIGHT for your tongue.

14g is standard intitially, and if you go to a larger gauge, don't go bigger than a 10 or 8, because the extra size and weight can cause saliva gland problems underneath your tongue and makes it easier to accidentaly fracture your teeth.
