Let me explain what I'm doing, in case there's a better way. I made a picture in paint of a bulletin board. The idea is to make that my desktop background, and save a few things that I'll always need (a phone number, a website) on it in the form of 'notes' hung (drawn) on the 'bulletin board'. The thing is, I also wanted to add some of my kids' pictures to the board and paint won't open them because 'this is not a valid bitmap file'.

Sometimes you can click File then save as, then then second window below where you name it is a drop down window. You can select a different format. Say it was a JPEG and you wanted it to be a BMP, then in the drop down select BMP format.

The remaining ways requires you to have a photo editor program that allows you to change formats etc.

Another way is open the your bulletin picture with MS Paint, the open anther MS Paint program, and open the picture you want on your bulletin. Click EDIT on top menu, click Select All, then Click EDIT again and select copy.

Now minimize that program and bring up your bulletin picture agian in MS Paint, Click EDIT, select Paste,

Resize it and move it where you want it. Then when you save your changes it will all be in BMP format.

Sounds like you need a Picture editor. Probably something with some power.

Try using PAint.NET, it's better than Paint, and it's free. http://www.getpaint.net/
