I have worked in a dental office for over thirty years. Most dentists have more than one patient at a time. While you are getting numb, he may be finishing a procedure on his previous patient. Some procedures only take a couple of minutes (post operative surgical check, cementing a crown, examinations, etc.)
He also could have a phone call. If you have had this happen several times and you are left in a condition that is uncomfortable for you, you would not be out of line to mention it. In my office, we would make a note to be careful not to leave you that way. The doctor is probably unaware that whatever was in your mouth tasted really bad.

No, he went to check his manuel on how to do what ever it is he's suppose to do! Seriously now, come on.
Oh yeah, coffee break my unhuhmm! It's usually because one of us is standing at the door tapping our foot at him, because he skipped over us like we, and our patient didn't even exist. Our patient was next in line for a check or anesthetic to be administered or check and extraction site before releasing a patient, little things like that. So just sit there patiently waiting next time and know it wasn't because he just wanted coffee, it's because it wasn't really your turn. Most Dentist have about 4 to 6 chairs with patients all waiting on him to do "something". So he's running a rat race with a bunch of women tracking him down all day long to come check this or do that. We never give the poor guy a break, and neither does he with us. Just so you know, you're not the only ones who wonder about this, it usually gets discussed by my patients and they are understanding about it. Hope I've cleared this up for all of you here. Remember your the patient, show some patients please!

The Dr goes to see another patient. There are other people waiting to see the dentist, so in between patient the Dr. goes to see them and then returns.

Good question as well. He might be telling jokes about you. Who knows. People period are unprofessional these days. I once went to the dermatologist and the Dr. was talking about the last patient seen while I was in the room. He said "my god when will she get her fat a#% out of here, jesus".

No crap i have wondered that myself. If his assistant is good looking you may be in trouble. If she's not, you may be in more trouble. Better make sure he washes his hands when he gets back.
