Here in Illinois where there are no bicycle shoulders to ride on, both the idiot and the athlete are committing suicide. Seriously I drive a ready mix truck and also ride to work. The guys are fascinated that I ride, BUT, if they have to slow down for a biker on the road, right away I get the "why can't you guys ride on some side street where you belong". I give, I have no answer

anyone who rides any bike in any situation should be wearing a helmet (athlete or not). anyone not wearing a helmet is pretty much an idiot.
riding for recreation, riding for fitness, and riding for commuting are still on the roads and the person needs to follow all traffic laws... it's the cars and the idiots driving them that you need to watch out for...
but I know that some cyclists can be snobs about what others are riding and wearing, but as long as they wear a helmet, I view all cyclists as cool people.

Helmet - schmelmet! If a car hits you at high speed on a road - you`re dead meat...
As for the idiot part: if anyone gives me an angry honk while overtaking, i just give them the good-ol finger, and smile in their face.
Ride on!!!

sure that's unlawful. you will possibly be prosecuted for offences at the same time as in value of a pedal cycle on a public highway only as in case you have been utilising a motorised motor vehicle. in case you're inebriated and driving a bicycle you will possibly be carried out for that only the comparable as in case you have been kettled driving a motor vehicle. Use of a cellular telephone at the same time as driving is an offence and has been or numerous years.

I do not think so. I ride my bike along the highway which is a 70 MPH zone, you just have to be alert.
