My seven year old recently came to me and said that he feels like everything is speeded up in his body. I asked him if it happens all of the time and he said no just sometimes. Then a couple of mornings later he said that he was hearing voices and that one was angry and one was nice. He said that he never can hear what they say but he knows that they are there. He couldn't tell me how long they had been there. I am so scared that something might bad be wrong with him. He has been a normal kid, he has an older brother and a younger sister. No divorce in my marriage. My husband and I have been married 14 years. I don't know what to do.

This is definitely not normal. Your son needs to see a doctor soon, because this could be any number of things. While the obvious thing is to jump to a conclusion of schizophrenia, the symptoms may not be due to a mental illness. And even if they are, that may not be as major a problem as you think. Mental illness is just illness. It's not something that's "caused" by anything like divorce, or stress, or anything like that.

But the reason he needs to see a doctor immediately is that the symptoms could be something physical that is not a chemical imbalance. One of the things it could be is a brain tumor. It's probably not, but because of the sudden onset, his age, and the fact that he can't understand the voices, it may not be mental illness at all.

The first psychotic break in schizophrenia usually happens in the later teens or early 20s.

Your son needs to see a doctor. Soon.

Good luck and best wishes. I certainly hope it is a minor problem, an interaction from medication or something.

Take him to a doctor. Make sure his friends are decent friends, sometimes friend's older brothers think it's funny to sneak little kids drugs in something just for their own selfish entertainment. Be your own detective and monitor him closely. Also, have him see an allergist. It could be food allgeries.
Sometimes the strangest things are the truth.

You need to call your son's doctor today and have him seen. What he is describing is not something you should take the "wait and see" approach on. Call today and make an appointment.
