I'm Christian, and I study in the manuscripts, which do not use scare tactics of any kind. There is one time that hell will be in effect; After Christ returns, there will be a 1000 year period of teaching and disipline. Both are needed badly.
After that, there is the judgement. But during that teaching period, you won't have to ask someone if they think God exists, they will already see Christ and will have been taught.
Then, and only then, if they do not want to live under his govern, then they will go into the lake of fire, which will cause them to be blotted out of existance and memory. They will be turned to ashes from within. No folks burning and screaming for an eternity in a fire pit. Thats the nonsense of man, and nothing more. Some may ask, if theres a thousand year period of teaching, then that means we all are gonna get a second chance? The answer is no. Theres no second chance, but with what is being taught (or not being taught, better said) God knows many of us do not have even a first chance to hear real truth.
Many turn against religion because of the nonsense taught, and you seem to be a prime example.
But, hang in there, friend - God does hold the truth, its just that man likes to tweek it just a bit and then dish it out, to where nothing in it seems to make sense.
This makes God real unhappy, and thats why He says He's coming with a rod of iron (for stern correction) AND He intends to visit the pulpits FIRST. Gee, wonder why.........

Yes, you are having a hard time. Your points are valid. It's too bad that those you have come in contact with were such poor representatives of the beliefs that they hold. I do know that Mormons are not polygamists. While it was common practice during the 19th century, that practice has been banned for years, except for some off-shoots of the church who the Mormon church as a whole does not accept. I can't say anything about Scientologists, because I am ignorant on that one.
As for Christians, however, I am one. I don't tell people they will go to hell if they don't follow Jesus. I don't need to do that. The Bible already says it. As Christians (followers of Jesus Christ) we are to live by His example. Jesus was loving, accepting of everyone, merciful, kind, compassionate and understanding. He still is! The Bible tells us what the consequences of sin are and how we are to get to Heaven. Sure, there are many other ways to believe, and they all point away from Jesus Christ. The Bible talks about that. That is nothing new.
God doesn't want us to believe His Word (the Bible) because someone is cramming it down our throats. He wants us to believe because we choose to and we have faith that what the Bible says is true. We can believe something else. It's our choice. Many well-intentioned Christians miss the mark when they try to scare someone into Heaven. That's not what Christ wants us to do. He wants us to be a light in the darkness. He wants us to show the way to Heaven by our love - not our judgmental browbeating of others. Why would one WANT to follow someone who behaves this way? Where is the appeal in THAT?
We Christians are not all like that. I am speaking only for myself here, but I know there are SO many who believe as I do. The Christ we follow is loving and merciful. He wants us to have a relationship with Him because not only does that benefit us with peace and joy despite any trials we might be experiencing in our lives, but also because by believing that Christ died for our sins and accepting His gift of salvation, we can live forever in Heaven with God when we die. Jesus calls all those who are "thirsty" to drink the "living water" and follow Him. He makes us want to have that joy and peace. It is when we browbeat others into submission to our beliefs that we scare people away. That is not Christ-like, nor is it typical of the vast majority of Christians. I am sorry that your experience was so bad. I hope you will give God the chance to demonstrate His love for you, because He truly, truly does love you and really does want what's best for each of us.

I have gone to church my whole life. I am an Adventist, I don't promote any certain church I promote the Bible. We can not judge who will or will not go to Heaven or Hell. God also tells us (in his words) that just because someone thinks they are a Christian or goes to church every week, that doesn't make you a place in Heaven either. God lets us know it is your heart. He knows what is in your heart and he gave his son in order for us to beg forgiveness and have that chance of Heaven. We as human beings are not guaranteed a spot. Try saying a prayer and then read in the bible. Pray before you start each time and I bet you get a better understanding. I know it is the only thing that gives me strength.

It is best to examine yourself, to see if you even believe in a supreme being. Hate is a very negative emotion, it breeds contempt and evil thoughts. If you want to find out the truth, distance yourself from all around you, and if you have faith, then do as it is written and begin your prayer life with GOD. Religion comes when you have truly accepted the WORD as TRUTH, and the word is CHRIST. Youa re not ready for religion at this stage, you need as it is written "spiritual milk' I cannot wait to get past this infant stage, I want the depths of Christ to dwell within me. Forget religion, first seek to find truth. Right now, I can see that you wouldnt be willing to surrender the earthly things to even be considered religious. Take one step at a time, but without faith, youll remain on the outside of the truth. Believe me, it is not easy. But with God all things are possible.

OK, I get it, you don't like born again Christians (I am one, but you're entitled to your opinion, so...).
Just if you could do one small favor and NOT lump us with Mormons and Scientologists, both of which are cults not religions.

Try spirituality.there is no pressure from any one.God talks to you directly one on one to your heart, soul, and mind and guides you to do right to others without anyone bugging you. Those feelings you have that are good come from him ,in my opinion.

You really need a "hate" check on your life.
If you don't believe in those things then just stop thinking about them and let the people who do believe in them go on with their lives.
We can only make decisions and live our own lives.
