A muscle "pull" is actually a muscle tear. Torn flesh will become inflamed as the body increases blood flow to the injury. 10-15 minute ice treatments will help shrink blood vessels and bring down the inflammation. Heat will increase blood flow and make the injury worse in the initial period. Massage will also make it worse, as you've found out the hard way, because it increases blood flow and it digs into torn muscle tissue.
Let the muscle rest for a couple days, and if you can, take anti-inflammatory pain killers like ibuprofen (Advil), naproxen sodium (Aleve), or aspirin. Acetaminophen will kill pain, but won't help the swelling.
When it starts feeling better, small amounts of heat for short periods of time will help speed healing by again bringing more blood to the injury. GENTLE stretching and massage can help, but if either is vigourous it can make it worse again.

ice it for 10 mins then 10 without ice and repeat for about an hour. It will make it feel better but don't get massages that will make the muscle worse. When you're going to sleep at night use DEEP COLD it's a muscle relaxing gel that comes in a jar or in strips. When you first put it on it will be extrememly cold but it will feel amazing. Be sure to rub in the gel really well over entire area. You'll be able to get to sleep better.

Depends on what you actually did to it.
A general rule of thumb is ice for 15 minutes, off for 15 minutes and repeat for a day.
