Consequence of sin.

2007-02-02 07:23:50 · answer #1 · answered by HAND 5 · 0 0

Sickness and death exist because of original sin. In the new heaven and the new earth there will be no sickness or death because the sin of man will have been eliminated forever. Jesus atoned for our sin upon the cross, but sin still exists because the devil has an illegal leasehold on the world. At the end, the devil will be cast into the lake of fire and his rule over the earth shall end forever.

"Article 5: THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK - SACRAMENT

1500 Illness and suffering have always been among the gravest problems confronted in human life. In illness, man experiences his powerlessness, his limitations, and his finitude. Every illness can make us glimpse death.

1501 Illness can lead to anguish, self-absorption, sometimes even despair and revolt against God. It can also make a person more mature, helping him discern in his life what is not essential so that he can turn toward that which is. Very often illness provokes a search for God and a return to him.

1502 The man of the Old Testament lives his sickness in the presence of God. It is before God that he laments his illness, and it is of God, Master of life and death, that he implores healing. Illness becomes a way to conversion; God's forgiveness initiates the healing. It is the experience of Israel that illness is mysteriously linked to sin and evil, and that faithfulness to God according to his law restores life: "For I am the Lord, your healer." The prophet intuits that suffering can also have a redemptive meaning for the sins of others. Finally Isaiah announces that God will usher in a time for Zion when he will pardon every offense and heal every illness.

Most members of my religion (Wicca), including myself, believe that human beings are one form of life among many, all of which have significance and value. Therefore, that a virus or a bacterium should choose to use us as a medium in which to reproduce is to be expected. Why shouldn't they? We're an available host, and our life, in the big picture, is just part of the interconnected circles of life and death.

As for other kinds of sickness (cancer, genetic diseases, MS, etc)... we are animals, and animals are not perfect systems. We have flaws and failures in functioning. Again, it's to be expected, and borne with as much patience and courage as possible when it happens to us.

While a Wiccan might do spellwork or pay to the God/Goddess for healing, when the time comes for us to die we try to accept it as part of the natural order of things. There is no sense of "why does it have to happen to me?" -- it happens to everyone, after all.

This is a very interesting question and I'm looking forward to seeing the various answers people have to offer.

If you go by the Torah sickness was to teach the sinners or kill evil people.

If you go by the Christian teachings, sickness is to teach us to be stronger.

The truth is that sickness just happens to animals when their immune systems are weakened. We are learning more and more every day and attributing less and less to random acts of God.

That is not to say that God did not create the Universe. It is to say that God created a Universe that is more complicated than we ever believed and everything is connected in our Universe.

Take care,
Troy

My religion says sickness exists because humans are animals, and animals are subject to bacterial and viral infections.

In the Buddhist pov, illnesses arise due to one's immune system being attacked by bacteria or viruses. The propensity is, more or less, dependent upon how well your body can fight the virus, where you live, etc. Common sense. All phenomena arise due to causes and conditions, are changing and impermanent.

Material body is meant for suffering.
No one wants to be diseased, and no one wants to become old, but there is no avoiding these. Unless we have a pessimistic view of this material life, considering the distresses of birth, death, old age and disease, there is no impetus for our making advancement in spiritual life.

“Sickness” is alive. When you have a virus or bacteria, you have a living creature in your body who is simply trying to survive, just like you. In order to survive, they have evolved to live as parasites in your body, much to your inconvenience. It’s nothing personal.

Other things like burns, rashes and loss of limbs are part of YOUR evolution. If you get burned on a fire, you learn not to touch fire again.
