My dogs never needed rabies while pregnant, vet's out til Monday. Is it safe to give her the rabies shot?

I mentioned that my vet is out of town so you'd know WHY I came here instead of calling her. It's illegal here too. Only Arkansas residents can give rabies themselves (or so I was told) I was NOT suggesting that I would do it myself.

No. The vaccines aren't safe for a pregnant dog & pups. If the dog is not at a high risk for rabies, like a house dog or in a fenced yard, wait to discuss it with your vet.
She'll be fine.

Assuming it's a killed virus vaccination, then yes it should be safe. But with most veterinarians using a 3 year rabies vaccination, it would probably be safer to wait until she has the puppies. It would depend on when she was last vaccinated and if she was vaccinated with the 1 yr or 3 yr vaccine. At the very least it is certainly safe enough to wait until Monday and ask your veterinarian what he recommends.

The one vaccination that is absolutely not recommended to give during pregnancy is the distemper vaccine as that one will almost always cause some kind of birth defect.

It is safe to give the rabie shot to a pregnant *****. However no other shots are. Can't you call your vet and just ask? I don't think your dog is going to get infected other the next 72 hours. I think you should wait, if you can. however if you just have to for what ever reason, i assure you that you can do it. I know this because i just asked my vet about the same thing not even a month ago cause my pit bull was pregnant and needed hers.

The rabies shot is good for 3 years and possibly even 7 or 8. I'd definitely wait until the pups are born and weaned before giving vaccinations.

Well first of all the Rabies has to be given by a licensed vet or the city/county/state will not accept the vaccine. Second if you are concerned about the health of the puppies then ask your vet. If it is a threat then they will most likely not give her any shots. Ask your vet what they think. If she has already had the puppies and is still nursing them then i THINK it would be ok to vaccinate and the puppies would get protection from the mothers milk, but ask your vet just to make sure. do not give her her rabies yet. She will to steer clear of any vaccinations that coul effect her pups. I believe the rabies is just like any other vaccination where a small amount of the rabies is injected into them so that their bodies can fight it off..I could be wrong BUT I am Pretty sure that the rabies could seriousy effect the pups and depending on how far along she is, it could cause birth defects in the pups and I am sure you dont want that

Uh...in my state, Texas, only a vet can give a Rabies shot, the rest of them can be done by the owner. There is probably a really good reason for that regulation.

In most states it not legel to give the rabies yourself. Better to wait for the vet. Why waste the money on a shot the state won't uphold. A weekend won't matter.

While it is safe to vaccinate pregnant bit ches with the rabies vaccine, I would wait.
You do NOT vaccinate with other vaccines however.
And next time, check the bit ches records and vaccinate BEFORE breeding.
