Rice, sparklers, and birdseed aren't allowed by my venue. I thought about bubbles, but those are a bit overused. Butterflies and doves are expensive. Balloons and rose petals are okay, but I'm looking for something that is a bit more unique.

Many venues have banned those messy and sometimes dangerous materials used for send-offs -- if you ever tried to clear up confetti or rice you'd realise how selfish it is to use things like that.
One idea worth pursuing is to have a musical sendoff. Most towns and cities have at least someone suitable. How about a bagpiper?

We went to our florist, and got flowers that were a bit past their prime, she sold to us for next to nothing. They were every color in the rainbow, we took all the petals off, and put them in baskets, and had our neices walk around the make sure everyone got a handfull of them, the pictures were awesome! looked like a tickertape parade!

Buy tiny silver bells (they're shaped like traditional wedding bells) and have folks ring them as you leave.
BTW, traditionally it was believed that ringing of bells symbolized luck for the marriage and carried the prayers of the well-wishers to heaven.
